  Off-siding
Posted by: Grahamm - 03-04-13, 12:10 PM - Forum: General - Replies (14)

Rather than drag the "Respect" thread off topic, I thought I'd post this in a new thread.

Firstly I was surprised when I read this article from the AA which was linked to in the other thread, because that's not "off-siding" as I understand the term, but rather "Illegal riding". A traffic island with blue sign with a white "Keep Left" arrow is a mandatory, ie you *must* obey it and going the wrong side of it is bloody dangerous as much as anything else.

However the definition of "off-siding" that I'm familiar with is when you position your bike across the centre line. generally on a left hand bend, in order to give yourself a better view of the road ahead.

Here is the current IAM advice on this practice for people taking their Advanced Test:

Quote:16: Definition clarification: ‘Off-siding’ = the crossing of the centre line/hazard line, (or in the absence of such a line, the centre of the carriageway) in order to extend a view.

Off-siding – Single track road clarification: In situations where there is no possibility of passing an oncoming vehicle due to the width of the road and in order to enable your presence to be seen earlier, this is acceptable, providing it is both advantageous and gives no risk of conflict.

Off-siding (to extend view) – two-way carriageway clarification:

Experience is showing that this is causing Candidates to put themselves in danger. The IAM actively discourages this practice and it is therefore not acceptable on test.

Related to this is their advice on straight-lining or "trimming" a series of bends:

Quote:17: Set of open bends – straight-lining/trimming clarification:

Trimming or straight-lining a set of open bends whilst acceptable on test must not be carried out if there is a risk of conflict with other road users or where it will inconvenience, confuse or cause alarm or distress, to others.

If the Candidate compromises their own or any other road user’s safety they will fail the test.

So mostly the advice seems to be "Don't put yourself in danger" and "Don't do something that will cause someone else to feel they have to change speed or direction".

  Puncture safe anyone?
Posted by: maddog04 - 03-04-13, 10:50 AM - Forum: General - Replies (16)

after 2 punctures days apart and needing a new rear at £100 I was asked at the bike shop if I'd be interested in "Puncture safe" £35 for both wheels and he says he uses it on his own bikes
this is like the gooey stuff you put in push bike tyres and seals the puncture instantly (have used this type of stuff  on my MTB in the past and it was brilliant)
anyone used it yet on their m/bike and any good or bad reviews?
cheers

  Horrible final drive clunking
Posted by: Mr Juju - 03-04-13, 10:11 AM - Forum: FZS600 Fazer - Replies (6)

Hi All, new to Fazer ownership (3 weeks) but haven't smiled soooo much in ages.

I am getting a horrible vibration / clunking through the pegs most noticeable at about 4,000 revs - 40 mph but seems to be there whenever I throttle on.

Don't notice it when I hit the powerband  Wink

Any ideas , I have had a quick look around the forum but can't seem to find anything.

Cheers!

Pete

  Unknown Connectors and Removing Datatool
Posted by: Thorn - 03-04-13, 03:28 AM - Forum: FZS600 Fazer - Replies (3)

Hi, in the process of cleaning up the revolting mess one of the previous owners decided to make of the harness, I came across 2 connectors on the harness that aren't connected to anything. I've looked at the wiring diagram for the 2002 model but can't seem to find them on it. Can anyone else identify these?

The first connector is near the battery compartment, adjacent to the fusebox, it appears to be shorted with a metal plate:

The second connector is at the left side of the taillight, next to the inline fuse for the rear indicators, and it appears to be capped:
(The one on the right)

Beyond this, does anyone know how to remove the datatool system? Apparently the original fobbed key snapped many owners ago, and someone (Yamaha garage apparently) made a completely half arsed attempt at disabling it. They disabled the alarm alright, but they also made a particularly disgusting mess of the harness which I'd like to clean up, aswell as regain the space that ugly datatool box takes.

Here's a picture of the messy wiring harness, the actual datatool alarm is just off-screen to the right.

P.S: Is there a way to insert images here with img tags, and set them to a fixed (smaller) size? The standard bbcode method doesn't seem to work.

Edit: So the first connector is actually the sidestand plug, still looking for the second one though.

Well after my ranting about getting about 32mpg around town, and thinking there was something wrong with the bike, I feel I must make a public apology!
Have done two longer journeys on the old girl now and I was bloody impressed, did a tank of 195 miles, about 155 of that was motorways and 50 odd of that was very short run commuting - mpg on that tank worked out to be 52mpg! Didn't think that was at all bad as I averaged about 85/90mph for pretty much the entire run home from London to Leicester, fully loaded with my hard luggage on the back!
Had an even better result today, went out for a bit of a quick leisure blast, it was still pretty nippy out and there seemed to be cars everywhere so I couldn't properly hammer the old girl around, but on my tank of 100 miles, roughly 50 motorway and 50 having a blast, I got an mpg reading of 56.6mpg! Not bleeding bad at all that in my book, from a 1000cc pretty powerful engine!
Must admit, as much as I loved the top end scream of my old ninja 900 there's something lovely about the midrange on the FZS, the amount of time I spent today trying to put it into 7th! Even when I was at the twisties I was alternating between third and fourth for most of the time and the old girl was surfing the mid-range like a goodun.

They've got quite weird fuelling characteristics though as stock haven't they, I can tell it's running lean as it's quite hard to maintain a completely neutral throttle, and going from closed to open throttle does resort in a bit of jerking. Even more weirdly when I got home the bike smelt quite petrolly (usually a sign in my book of the bike running rich) which I don't really understand, I had flled it up so it may have been leaking a tad out of the overflow pipe or something, but I'd done 20 odd miles between the petrol station and my house!
All i need to do now is win the Euromillions; set of clipons, suspension upgrade, nice set of race wheels and a decent jet kit and setup, and this bike would be a BEAST.
