Hi, all

Don't know if you have any French members I'm an expat living in Burgundy but joined FOC UK as it seems to have a good following and some interesting posts. And life' is always easier when it's in your mother tongue!

Recently joined as have a acquired a '98 Fazer 600 in pretty good nick. Will be tinkering with rather than restoring as it has been well loved but will undoubtedly be looking for tips and advice.

  Fazer 400 4YR0
Posted by: Martin65150 - 22-02-24, 08:56 AM - Forum: Fazer 400 and other models - Replies (2)

Morning all,

My wife owns a Fazer 400, frame 4YR004547, engine 4YR003740. When I'm searching for parts, all I seem to find are 4YR1 and 4YR3 designations. Is hers a Japanese-only version, perhaps? Will the parts be interchangeable?

Anyway, I'm looking for some carb parts, specifically;
diaphragms and the T connectors

If anyone has some sitting in their garage or knows of where I might find them, I'd be eternally grateful. Need to get the wife's bike back on the road before she kills me!  :eek

Cheers.
Martin

  Cam Chain tensioner removal/installation process
Posted by: Dman2019 - 19-02-24, 07:24 AM - Forum: FZS600 Fazer - Replies (2)

Morning all,
I need to change the cam chain tensioner due to the rattle that I have.
I have watched a few YouTube videos.  Most say to put the engine in top dead centre before removing the cam tensioner.
I read the Haynes manual and it just said to take it out.  No mention of putting the engine in TDC
I have read some forums and haven't seen anyone mention putting it in TDC

What is everyone's thoughts?

Cheers

  Starter cut off or....?
Posted by: Fubar byker - 18-02-24, 01:20 PM - Forum: FZS600 Fazer - Replies (9)

Hey all, so I've been looking through some of the old posts to do with the same issue I'm having - no spark - and I think I've narrowed down the problem but have a couple of questions.

1. the initial clicking/ticking you hear when the key is turned (button NOT pressed), is this the starter circuit cut off/fuel pump relay?

2. testing resistance on the ignition coils - primary - the Haynes manual states the reading should be between 1.87 - 2.53ohm. I'm getting 3.5 on both coils and according to the book, they need replacing but I've seen a few people saying that reading is ok?

3. what is the most likely cause of no spark? I don't have the funds to start replacing loads of bits.
I have checked:
battery is charged and holding full charge;
new plugs;
plug caps and coils HT leads are testing fine;
fuses are all good;
earths are good as far as I can tell;
starter motor is turning over and solenoid is clicking as it should;
pick up coil is fine (even though the manual gives the wrong colour wires!);
checked connector blocks and all seem fine - no corrosion and tightly connected.

I'm about to test continuity on pretty much everything and carry out the tests for the starter cut off/fuel pump relay as per the book but I think it's that that is causing the problem (very limited knowledge but logically thinking...)

Sorry it's a lot to take in but I'm sure it's something simple I'm missing

All lights on dash are n, horn and lights work and engine turns over.

Cheers.....anyone!

Unfortunately Im not a font of knowledge but I'll hang out and have a go as much as I can.

  Fuel pump overflow problem (bad pump, or bad carbs?)
Posted by: Underwud - 15-02-24, 06:41 AM - Forum: FZS600 Fazer - Replies (1)

Greetings,

Recently, I encountered an issue with my FZS 600 (98'). Despite investing a significant amount of time exploring and following recommendations from my mechanics, I find myself questioning several aspects of the incident.

In brief, while riding, my bike suddenly experienced a loss of power, forcing me to pull over. Subsequently, the bike shut off, and all attempts to restart it failed. Upon inspection, I observed a substantial fuel leak originating from the air filter box and the drain hose. As a novice rider who had recently embarked on this journey, I was ill-prepared for such an unforeseen circumstance, especially considering that I had recently undertaken comprehensive maintenance, including carburetor cleaning and general servicing. As I waited for assistance to arrive and transport me to the mechanic, the fuel continued to overflow, mixing with oil, saturating the spark plugs, and ultimately depleting the fuel tank entirely.

Upon assessment, my mechanic drained the system, replaced the oil, oil filter, and spark plugs. According to their diagnosis, the malfunction stemmed from a faulty fuel pump, specifically a component responsible for regulating pressure. To elaborate in my own words, it seems that the mechanism within the fuel pump designed to control pressure, thus dictating when the pump should cease operation upon reaching maximum pressure, had become defective. Consequently, the pump continued to operate beyond its intended limits, resulting in the fuel overflow. The absence of a relay exacerbates the issue, as it could have preemptively prevented such a scenario.

Has anyone experienced a similar situation, and can you confirm the validity of my mechanic's explanation? Additionally, my mechanic suggested the installation of a vacuum valve as an additional safeguard against future occurrences.

Regarding the replacement of the fuel pump, what factors should I consider to ensure I acquire a reliable one, given the prevalence of substandard options on the market?

Thank you for your attention and assistance.

Best regards,
AJ
