Is MCN relevant any more?
Posted by: agricola - 26-06-19, 07:48 PM - Forum: General - Replies (26)

First Wednesday for a considerable time that I have not picked up a copy of Motorcycle News. Ive found less and less of interest to me inside the pages, it seems to be preoccupied with high end, expensive, technologically advanced machines that most riders dont want (cos you hardly ever see them on the roads) or simply cant afford. I reckon it provides little entertainment or information for the majority of riders, so it looks like the parting of the ways. Anybody else any views on it?

  Bike off the road now...

Fitted new chain & sprockets this morning

bought a530 pitch 110 link Ognibene Gold Chain

and Ognibene sprockets std 15 teeth front and 48 rear.

the rivet pin was a little different than a DID one but i thought I had fitted it ok.

Went out for a test ride and after 20mins thought all was well.
On way home at 50mph bang the rivet link let go...... Should have gone to garage and had it checked....

So pushed bike home 1/2 mile..... very hot today I was drenched when I got home..

the rivet link grabed hold of the top bolt which holds the bearing cover plate (sits behind the front sprocket) and mangled it up it's item 36 on the ajsutton website

see https://www.ajsutton.co.uk/genuineparts/...case?uID=0

It is only tightened up to 10Nm so not holding anything other than the cover plate.

But the casting has been ripped out you can see half the threads with a chunk missing from the left side.

So I am a little unhappy with myself for not doing a propper job.

So need to work out how to fix it and hope I havn't trashed the gearbox or any other internals.

I will try and get a photo loaded at the weekend after I remove the front sprocket...

  Raximo short levers

Howdy all you filthy foccers, I was wondering what your opinions on Raximo short levers are, I'm looking to swap mine out but am wary of the cheaper Chinese ones on fleabag, these are what I'm looking at?

  EXUP....Can you feel the force
Posted by: midden - 25-06-19, 06:36 PM - Forum: Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner - Replies (5)

So  when the exup kicks in, I presume around 7k rpm  is it noticeable like a powerband  or should it just be a smooth affair.

How does it feel?  can you feel the force

  clocks gone bad
Posted by: 1967fazer - 25-06-19, 06:29 PM - Forum: Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner - Replies (10)

Greetings everyone in Fazerland, its been a number of years since the last time I was on here, life in general taking over etc! So to my problem, recently got the old girl out of mothballs, having not ridden her for over a year :eek , gave her a wash and took for an MoT, when i got to the testing station i discovered my clocks had stopped working! The rev counter isn't working at all, the speedo didn't work when riding it, the clock and odometer aren't working either. In fact, the only thing working on there is the fuel gauge! So, my question is, anyone any ideas as to what could be the problem?
As a matter of interest, I have had the clocks apart and there are no corroded or burnt connections on the PCB, the plug into the back is clean and there does seem to be power going to the clocks, so I'm a little stumped, supposed to be going up to the Lakes this weekend coming and don't fancy guessing my speed!  :lol  Thanks in advance Smile

Just been told £2000 to repair my FZ1S
Posted by: Streetbudgie - 25-06-19, 03:52 PM - Forum: General - Replies (60)

After uttering every swear word possible this is what happened:

On the way home last night I noticed a high pitched whirring noise, I was only a mile form home so kept going, got home checked a few things and started her up again and all seemed ok.

Started it this morning seemd ok, got about a mile down the road and the engine light came on, turned round and went home but it dies after about 100 yards, pushed it home and called breakdown.

Breakdown have taken it to a main dealer who has just phoned and said that the generator has come apart and broken up and quoted me £800 for parts (generator / regulator / battery) and it wil be another £1200 labour - so a total bill of around £2000 plus they are not willing to gaurantee the work as they said parts of the magnets from the generator could have got in the engine and will cause more damage.

So I could agree to the work, they do it, then start it up and the engine is damaged further and I still owe them £2000

Obviously I'm not happy and a 2007 35k miles FZ1S is not worth investing another £2k in for a 'might fix it' solution.

They've emailed me some pictures which I'll try to post below.

Does this sound feasible to anyone?

Anyone else had a generator break up and ruin the engine?

How much does a replacement generator and rectifier really cost?

I am gutted beyond belief as I wanted to keep this bike until I retired and that would have been my last big bike.

Dielectic grease for electrical contacts and brake pad sliders...?
Posted by: Grahamm - 25-06-19, 12:43 PM - Forum: General - Replies (17)

Having had a problem with corroded electrical connectors, I'm looking at getting some Dielectric (non-conducting) Grease to put on them to repel water and keep them clean.
I've looked on eBay and Amazon and there's various silicone greases which apparently can also be used on brake slider pins!
Has anyone used this stuff and can comment or recommend?
