  Custom Fazer project so far...
Posted by: DarthFazer - 06-08-12, 11:46 PM - Forum: FZS600 Fazer - Replies (76)

History about the bike: Currently the 6th owner and despite the bullet proof nature and the sheer awesomeness of the Fzs600, its had a rough time over the years (99 reg) mainly due to negligent inconsiderate people cyclists/car drivers who think its all right to knock another mans pride and joy over and leave without even a note of apology...b*astards! pardon my french soo a little tlc was in order.

Me: White collar city boy in early 20's that moonlights as a blue collar grease monkey, been riding for 2 1/2 years, mechanical skills errm around Haynes manual 3 star level :b , trying to be modest here but have the privilege of having far more mechanically savvy friends at hand.

Prologue: What started of as a case of a simple case of minor panel repairs and service (major in actuality) and a custom paint-job has now turned out to be a fully fledged custom project with some modifications that to the best of my knowledge are unprecedented with the Fazer 600. Nothing in particular was planned and we 'did it as we went along' but the vision i had was to create a sportier looking front end with practical headlights without resorting to a foxeye nose cone and headlights to create a truly unique fazer and bring it in to the 21st century. Some may say why? why not just buy another bike!?, in the words of my 1199 panegale owner friend 'a fazer is a fazer, nothing else like it' and I'm sure most on here would agree.

So i Thought id share my experience with fellow foccer's who have been extremely helpful over the years and where better to document the project than right here on the Fazer's owners club unofficial forum. Any comments, questions or advice welcome and  appreciated

Disclaimer: This project is not intended to be instructional and definitely not recommended by the manufacturer.

Before: extensive damage to body/ paintwork. Front wheel bearing, leaking downpipes, seized front brake calliper etc...

  Starting - electrical problem
Posted by: peteski - 06-08-12, 09:59 PM - Forum: FZS600 Fazer - Replies (9)

I haven't been using the Fazer as much as maybe I should and she's getting a bit neglected. Had the bike from new and it's never let me down for the first eight year or so London commuting etc. However it's now starting to play up. Two year ago a blocked pilot jet caused a misfire that took me ages to diagnose. Now there's a new issue.

It wont start on the starter. It's almost like the battery is flat, you press the starter and you hear the starter relay tick-tick-ticking, and the motor turns over a tiny bit but just not enough to start. Battery is charged and seems fine. I've also connected my car battery but no difference. The starter relay has been taken off, tested confirmed to be working. Electrics is not really my bag so I'm struggling to understand the haines wiring diagram, which seems to be wrong for my model! One strange thing that I think is not correct is that I've got 12v on both the red/white and blue/white starter relay wires. Because of my lack of skills I was thinking of having a stab in the dark and swapping the starting circuit cutoff relay and seeing if that fixes it. Any advice would be appriciated.

Anyone know what years will fit?
Cheers guys,

  Rear brake pedal
Posted by: ghostbiker - 06-08-12, 06:47 PM - Forum: Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner - No Replies

I am about to get a few bits together to send off to the powdercoaters. i have pretty much everything i need now apart from a Gear leaver and the gear rod.

Now the last time i did some powdercoating i did the rear brake pedal and it lasted about 2 years before the coating wore off where the foot rubs the grippy area. and only about a year before it started to show signs of wear. i was thinking that the gear leaver has a rubber on it to stop your foot slipping so would be cool if i could do the same on the rough area of the brake pedal.

good idea i thought but i have no idea where to get something that might do the job AND look good.
or should i just get that 1 part recoated every 1-2 years lol

oh and if anyone has a cheap gear leaver and push rod let me know Tongue

  Stupid question but,,,

Is the air filter the same in the Mk1 Fazer and the Mk2 Foxeye?

In the book of words all it says is the filter is a Dry Element type.

Just before I buy this one,,,,

  What's it worth?
Posted by: Bracechenko - 06-08-12, 12:58 PM - Forum: FZS600 Fazer - Replies (13)

Hi guys & gals.

I'm thinking more and more about selling my FZS600 commuter bike as i've had one since 2006 and looking to buy something slightly younger. So, just trying to gauge what kind of money I might be able to get.

I'll put pics up before the end of the week but here's the details: -

2000 FZS600 in black
MOT till June 2013
8 mths tax
63,000 miles

Goodf stuff

Bombproof reliability - as a commuter it's never let me down
K&N filter - just re-oiled
New plugs
New Oil & Filter
Motad stainless pipes
Scottoiler
Oxford heated grips
Fuel can
BRAND SPANKING new Michelin Road Pilot 2 front tyre & plenty of meat on the rear (also RP2)
Fork seals replaced 6 mths ago
Brake caliper seals replaced & system bled and serviced 4 mths ago
C&S in good condition

Bad stuff

Forks are quite pitted
Some scratches on rear plastics due to soft luggage bungies rubbing
A few scratches on genny cover where I was clumsy and dropped it whilst trying to get onto centrestand

The bike is mechanically sound but the bodywork etc does show it's age and the fact that it's been used through all weather. Do you think i'd be asking for too much if I was happy to accept £1000?

Thoughts on a postcard
Brace

  DUMBASS ME!!
Posted by: MadDogMcQ - 06-08-12, 12:14 PM - Forum: Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner - Replies (1)

When fitting my SatNav mount, I got my voltmeter and removed the seat to find a convenient ignition-switched source. I should have just gone straight into the lighting circuit, but being lazy, I noticed that there was a connector quite close to the battery, so I tested the voltage reading from it and sure enough, 0v with no ignition and 12v with ignition on. Perfect!! So I made a joint into the wire and fitted my SatNav.

A few days later, I decided to have a full day out on the bike and connected the SatNav to its mount. With the ignition on, the charging symbol lit up and off I went on my journey. Somewhere in the Lake District, I moved into an area I'd never visited before and kinda got lost. So I pulled over to plot a destination on the SatNav only to find out that the low-battery symbol was flashing!! I couldn't understand it because when I'd set off, it was charging.

Anyway, I set off riding again and noticed that occasionally (and very briefly) the charging symbol would reappear. It was infuriating. I pulled over to the kerb and yes, it was definately on. As I pulled away, it went off. Pull over to the kerb - it started charging again. WTF???

I then realised what was happening - the charging symbol was coming on when I was stationary with the clutch pulled in. As soon as I moved off and released the clutch, the charging ceased. I had obviously tapped into the circuit which detects if the clutch is pulled in  Big Grin :lol Big Grin

What a dumbass  :rolleyes .  Sorted now.
