  Crashed my fazer
Posted by: nickodemon - 26-05-13, 12:06 PM - Forum: Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner - Replies (20)

Driving round a sharp bend on way home from a brilliant run to lochearnhead with the missus when some complete w#nker in a silver vauxhall vectra is heading straight at me on the wrong side of the road, so the only way to get out his way was to take the bike along a grass embankment and lay it down to avoid him. The utter scrote didn't stop and sped off, so i didn't get his reg no. The car following behind me had to swerve to avoid him and also didn't get the reg no.. The guy and his wife stopped and said if i hadn't gone onto the grass it would have been a head on collision. What kind of utter b#stard would leave us for dead at side of the road Sad  I contacted the police, who turned up and i gave them the details. The people that saw the accident will give a statement to my insurance explaining it was not my fault. I ain't sure how my insurance will work out, as i haven't got anyone to claim against. I am fully comp with protected no claims. Will my insurance pay out? Am i better off fixing it myself? Damage is fairing, which is pointing abou 6 " to the left  and  fairing bracket, scratches to headlight and a few other small scuffs. The ideal scenario would be for the insurance company to let me buy it back, so i could repair it myself.. Any advice on insurance appreciated. Thankfully both of us are fine, which is the most important thing Smile Here are a couple of pics..

Car oil (yes, thin of worms...) experiences
Posted by: Slaninar - 26-05-13, 09:03 AM - Forum: FZS600 Fazer - Replies (17)

Not trying to open a can of worms, just looking at the maintenance bills - wife's car vs my bike. Smile Got me thinking. So far I've only been using 100% synthetic motorcycle specific oil in all bikes - no problems, none whatsoever. Old, new models - all sweet... except the PRICE. Now:

I've been listening to lots of different stories. Some people swear by hundreds of thousands of trouble free kilometers with car oil in their motorbikes, while others (including the mechanic I often hang out with) say that FZS's revvy engine should use only motorcycle specific oil.

Now, I like to ride hard (when I warm the engine up of course), take it just below the red line often (11-12 k revs).

I'm interested to hear from FZS600 owners with lots of miles on their bikes that have used regular car oil. Did the engine start using up oil quickly, clutch, valves - was everything OK? How many miles did you test car oils, what change intervals?

Is it better to use full synth motorcycle oil and change at 8000 km, or use cheaper car oil at 5000 km change intervals?

I use bike for joyrides - so not even commuting. Just shorter or longer trips, or track.

10w60 race oil - is it smart?
Posted by: Slaninar - 26-05-13, 07:41 AM - Forum: FZS600 Fazer - Replies (10)

I got a chance to get this oil really, really cheap:

http://www.lubadmin.com/upload/produit/F..._1/173.pdf

It's Efl 10w60 race oil.

Now, I don't ride when it's below 15 degrees celsious, so spring, summer, autumn. Is this oil too thick for Fazer 600? So far I've been using 10w40 and 10w50, but 10w60 isn't listed in the owner's manual at all.

What do you guys think? Will it do any harm?

Can I mix oils and what results will I get say 10w60 and 10w40?

  Stick coil mod
Posted by: Superfour Tom - 26-05-13, 01:08 AM - Forum: FZS600 Fazer - Replies (17)

For anyone wanting to get rid of crusty old HT leads or Knackered coils, This is for you  Smile

Did this mod today. Nothing in particular wrong with my coils, the HT's were just stiff, Cracked and oxidised at the end.
Simple enough, Coils used are 636r ninja (unsure on the year).

Standard coils read 2.5ohm's (YMMV)
636 read 1.3ohm's (Will obviously double up to 2.6ohm's in a pair)

Very simple Simple loom, Just 2 pairs wired up in series, Drew up a little diagram.

Hope this helps.

FZS600 turns over but won't spark
Posted by: togsy - 25-05-13, 09:48 PM - Forum: FZS600 Fazer - Replies (10)

Hi

I've searched for answers on this but haven't come up with any, so I'm placing my first post in the hope someone might be able to help please.

My 2001 Fazer 600 has an ignition problem. I've been doing a big refurb' and got to the exciting bit of turning her over and no joy.

- Starter turns over and cranks properly.
- Air pressure coming out of exhaust.
- Fuel pump new and working.
- Turns out to be no spark at all.
- Installed new plugs, still no joy.

Following Haynes manual checked:

- the resistance of the caps (a little low at 4.58 ohms, but they max at 5 ohms new (NGK SD05F) so would this be enough to fault it?
- primary and secondary resistance of the HT coils, ok.
- resistance of the pick-up coil, ok.
- starter relay clicks ok.
- double checked fuel tap, ok.
- fuel through the pump ok.

Haynes manual suggests next problem is faulty ignition control unit (ECU black box thing under seat in rear light box). Is this likely to be it?

Any help gratefully received, thanks.
