New to me Gen 1 Fazer first ride
Posted by: ianh - 30-04-17, 11:40 AM - Forum: Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner - Replies (11)

Hi all. Got my bike from Peasy yesterday.
Rode it back from Peterborough to Plymouth - 290miles - so have formed a good impression of the bike.

Immediate thoughts
Was pleasantly surprised at how good an 11yr old bike can look. Obvious that the bike had been looked after. More to the point, it had all of the mods that I wanted (although, now looking for a few more!!) Yamaha build quality as good as my previous FJ1200 and my Thunderace had been.

Riding
Wow!! Felt like a moped after my big Ox of a ZZR1100!!
VERY similar riding position to a R1100GS I had. Very comfortable straightaway and a natural reach to all of the controls.
Right, clutch out - am I in gear? Yes I am. Bloody hell, first ride and can't engage clutch.  :b
Oh ok- it's at the end of the lever span (like right at the end!!)
Controls are very light, and we're off.
I remember in the 90's, test riding one of the first generation Triumph Sprints - the ones with the spine frame.
When I got back, I got on my 89' CBR600FL and felt like a giant.
Well, this is similar after my ZZR11.
Definitely a case of twist and go.

After fueling up (and spilling petrol over Peasy - don't ask!!) I got onto the A1.
My, isn't she fast, but the long throttle travel means it's easy to think you're at full throttle when you're not.
After rearticulating my throttle hand, I gave it some beans.
Indicated 140mph (allegedly) in seconds, with more to come.
Throttle like an on/off switch, with no real engine braking.
Mikes Full Monty Ivanising work has done it's job and there is no stuttering, hesitation or spluttering.
Just pure clean drive from any revs, in any gear.
Peasy fitted a different master cylinder and SBS sintered pads - EXCELLENT stopping power (1 or 2 fingers only)
Back brake effective too. Funny to let a car catch up at 90, then blast them away (childish I know :lol )
Comfort is fantastic, but three observations
1 - Seat is very soft and my arse is numb quite quickly
2 - Footrests seem quite high. I prefer to stretch my legs out to the pillion pegs and rest on them when cruising. This just makes        the footrests seem even higher when I use them again though.
3 - LOTS of turbulence around the DB screen, so lots of noise. Also a lot of pressure on my neck and shoulders. This got much        worse the nearer I got to Plymouth. :'(

At the end, I was cold and aching. Oh for my heated grips. The temperature had dropped significantly and the spattered flies on my visor slowed me down in the dark. That's when 'twist and go' and a high riding position was particularly useful.

Summary

It took me 41/2 hrs to get home, including a pitstop for fuel, with 160 before the light came on. That was at an easy 95-100mph (allegedly)
The bike felt 'new'. The R6 shock and the front fork service have definitely benefited the bike (I'm 6' and 17st)
The engine is like a turbine in the way the power is available, with a kick above 8k. Obviously faster in black too  Wink
Seems to me that, if I can sort out a couple of gripes, she's perfect.
Mirrors were good, headlights excellent, especially on full beam and road presence good to.

Gripes (personal to me)
Seat v soft - suggestions?
Footpegs high - suggestions
Screen buffeting - shorter screen, taller screen?
Cold hands - fitting heated grips asap.
Neck and shoulder soreness - screen change?
Clutch bite - idiots guide for me to adjust the cable/freeplay etc (pleeeaase)

  Gen 1 fuel tank
Posted by: tomlinscote - 30-04-17, 10:11 AM - Forum: Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner - Replies (5)

Hi all,

Following an accidental last Sunday i am i need of a new fuel tank, the original having a big dent in it. Is the tank specific to the 1000 or was it used on other models too? Hoping to get one from a scrappy/breakers so as many options as poss would be good. Also the plate that holds the footrest and gear lever has split in two, can this be welded or must it be replaced. If so same qn as for the tank...

I take it new tanks are going to be bloody expensive, any ideas how much??

Cheers

Tommo

  Gen 1 1000 Headlamp faults
Posted by: Gaz66 - 30-04-17, 09:47 AM - Forum: Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner - Replies (5)

Hi Peeps
I'm new to Fazers.

Having some electrical gremlins.
Just unpicked a right rats nest of Meta alarm loom bodging.
Alarm had failed before I got the bike, alarm multi-plug had the usual bypass bridging wire (poorly done).
Anyway alarm looms out, both of the alarm multi-plug connectors in the bikes loom under seat have been put back & bridged as per factory spec, bikes a runner.

For some reason I've lost live feed to dip/main beam & dash clocks illumination?.
Could just be a coincidence that some other fault is present, but lights worked prior to removing alarm loom.

Struggling to find what the unused 3pin connector is for next to alarm multi-plug connectors in bikes loom?.
Tested, I have 2 earths & a switched live
Is it for accessories
Any ideas pls?
I suspect ignition switch is faulty? Yet to confirm.
I'm just on with working thru loom.
Headlamp relays test correct as per manual.
Everything works except dip/main & dash clocks illumination.

Finding corroded pins in multi-plugs above rocker cover, removing male/female pins to clean.
Is this a known headlamp fault based on the issues I'm having?

Any helpful ideas are very much appreciated.
Rgds
Gaz

  190/55 rear tyre
Posted by: clumptydumpty - 29-04-17, 03:36 PM - Forum: Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner - Replies (2)

Just a head up to anyone buying tyres,

I was recently advised to buy a 55 tyre instead of a 50.
Had the tyres changed this morning and I personally think it's the best thing I've changed on the bike so far.
Turn in is better, mid cornering feel improved, slightly higher back end which I prefer.
I run on s20 evo tyres.
The only slight downside would be that it takes a tiny bit more clutch on take off but no big deal.

All personal experience but maybe someone else will enjoy the change

  Very uncomfortable motorcycle boot lining
Posted by: joebloggs - 28-04-17, 10:52 AM - Forum: General - Replies (18)

Brought a pair of boots off ebay, great for riding in but you can't walk more than five steps without getting sore feet. They seem to be lined with old hessian sacking and it rubs on the back of my heal as I walk. Other than throw them away I'm not sure what to do with them (had them to long to return)

Anyone had a similar problem?

Hi guys

Bike is getting some renthal bars next week to replace my bent stock one's, however I've heard to original bar ends don't fit them???

Does anyone know what bar ends do fit and if so could you supply any links?

I seen bar ends with mirrors however then I'm wondering how do I fill the gaps in the front fairing for the fairing mirrors?

Hope you can all help Smile

  Handlebar clamp bolts
Posted by: iamthearrison - 27-04-17, 05:27 PM - Forum: FZS600 Fazer - Replies (4)

My bike came with bar risers fitted, and I want to try it without them, but the clamp bolts are too long. Anyone know the length of the standard bolts, or can take one out and measure it, so I can either borrow a few from work or buy some?
