Hi there, I'm looking to buy a fazer (98-02) in the coming weeks (trying to get a bargain as winter starts to show). This will be my first 600 and I've absolutely got my heart set on a fazer. Looking for one that's going to ride everyday - rain or shine but don't want more the 20k on the clock - heard that cam tensioners go, downpipes rust etc etc.
You guys are the experts. I love these bikes (ridden a 1998 and a 2004 and the 1998 was much more fun). Can you offer any guidance on what to spot on a second hand one? Are there any signs that it's a dud that I should look out for. I'm aware that these are bomb-proof bikes and rarely give any trouble but if there was soemthing that was costly to replace and goes pretty regularly then it's be great to hear it!
Cheers
Revilo

I have just joined the new style forum. I was a member of the old one for about 7 or 8 years but have had other distractions recently which prevented much bike activity.
Still got the same Gen 1 and it still goes like a goodun.
Cheers,
Mark (on the old forum as 'mark pollard')

after the last one I said that was enough. the logistics of the supplies is just too much hassle due to the location of the venue. last couple of times I'd wondered about a change of location, so...
if the Gathering in the Glen was to stay alive, which part of Scotland would interest you?
not that I'm offering to carry on as organiser - cos I'd be more than happy for someone else to step forward.

| Ignition Advancer giving off more vibes than standard setup |

As per the old messageboard, I fitted a modified ignition advancer which does give a bit more low-down grunt.
I balanced the carbs yesterday after doing my valve clearances last week. Valves all set to mid-spec clearances.
Took the bike out for a decent spin today and encountered a lot more vibes than the standard setup, particularly around 4-6000rpm. It clears up from about 7000 upwards but I'm finding it quite irritating....the vibes through the bars are reminiscent of my old Bandit1200, which was part of the reason I got shot of it.
Anything worth trying to fix the problem? Think I read something years ago about adjusting the TPS to compensate......
(Ivan's Slip-on jetkit fitted and an aftermarket end-pipe with the baffle in)

what wisdom is there about tuning our engines? i haven't seen anything other than ivanising - which is pretty much unique for a forum. there's usually at least a few that have overbored, balanced and lightened etc...
