  How heavy is an engine?
Posted by: andybesy - 23-05-13, 07:20 PM - Forum: FZS600 Fazer - Replies (13)

Hello Folks,

How heavy is an FZS600 engine?

Can it be lifted? What about by two people?

Is it too heavy to transport in the boot of a medium sized car?

Just need a rough idea so I can get a perspective on weather I need to rent a van or rope my mate in to helping.

Thanks, Andy

R1 gear shift with modded alloy rod for Gen1 FZS 1000
Posted by: kebab19 - 23-05-13, 05:23 PM - Forum: For Sale & Wanted - Replies (9)

This popular mod makes gearchanges much easier & quicker on the old bus. Also included is an alloy gearchange rod which I have bent slightly in order to avoid it fouling the frame, so you can keep your original straight  Wink .

£20 inc postage

XJR 1300 Springs in Gen1 forks for a firmer ride
Posted by: kebab19 - 23-05-13, 03:08 PM - Forum: Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner - No Replies

Touched on this briefly in another thread, but for anyone fond of pies, here's a fairly cheap mod to sort the front-end out a bit more.

The forks springs from the XJR1300 can be fitted inside the Fazer's forks, and as they support a bike over 20kg heavier they are better suited to heavier riders if transferred. I found a set that were Ohlins aftermarket springs, claiming to be a further 10-15% stronger than the standard XJR springs, so more suitable for heavier riders.

Instructions: no point in me re-inventing the wheel, so just follow 'Bigworm's instructions for opening up the front forks:
http://www.yamahafz1oa.com/bigworm1sforkupgrade.shtml
Reassembly of forks is obviously reverse order of these instructions once you've switched springs & spacers over.

You need to make two smaller spacers in order to fit the longer XJR springs, I used a metal tube from B&Q. Take your original spacer down there & find a metre of metal tubing that has the same dimensions. I *think* it was 10mm diameter tubing with 1mm wall thickness.  My Ohlins springs were 388mm long so the spacers were 24mm shown below. Note that other XJR springs may be a different length so you may need longer / shorter spacers to match!

New setup inside fork leg, note the spacer is far shorter than the original Fazer's spacer

I found the springs to be a good improvement over standard setup, after backing the preload adjusters right off to minimum. I also use much lighter 2.5w fork oil, which I feel also helps compliance over small square bumps.

Obviously other springs from 43mm forks may well be suitable (and not just from Yamaha's), so it's a case of cutting the spacers to size to equal the length of the original fazer spring / spacer setup.

New FZS 600 owner in Bristol
Posted by: ltcorwin - 23-05-13, 11:18 AM - Forum: Introduction - Replies (9)

Greetings all,

I bought my lovely gold (aka Deep Reddish Yellow Cocktail) 99 FZS600 about a month ago, and been using the website for hints and tips.

Thought I should register and introduce myself.

Glasgow born, Bristol based.  Licence since uni, but a long hiatus between the 125 I had then and the Fazer I have now, though I kept my reflexes in with the odd go on my brother and father's various bikes.

Glad to be part of the community here.

More details on me and the bike to follow, I'm posting this from work, as I can't access the site properly from home just now duie to what I suspect is a DNS error at the BT ISP servers

  broken undertray
Posted by: mobile mouse - 23-05-13, 09:10 AM - Forum: FZS600 Fazer - Replies (6)

Hi,

Over the weekend I dropped the bike in slow motion, I put the side stand down and when getting off the bike it, the bike rolled fwd off the stand.
So while stepping off I had the unfortunate task of trying to stop the bike from dropping to the floor.
Ultimately the bike lay down on the engine bars and saved the front. but the rear left indicator touched down onto the kerb stone and punched through the undertray.

I gaffer taped it up and the other night had a go at using PVC pipe weld to fix the broken plastic.
It worked in some areas of the break but not all.

Has anyone attempted successfully to repair something like this. And how did you do it.

I have seen used undertrays going for £40 approx.
If I cannot repair how easy is it to replace it looks a complete strip down of the rear of the bike. Is it a 5spanner job.

What do you think repair or replace.
Has anyone attempted this replacement before and are there any pitfalls.
Help would be much appreciated.

With Beth passing her test it was time for her to get on her FZS600 after doing all her lessons on an SV. Alas she prefers the way the twin goes compared to the Fazer. We were going to advertise the Fazer on here but were offered what she was looking for in a trade in, which is hassle and haggle
free. So yesterday we took delivery of a Suzuki Gladius in black and I gotta say "what a nice wee bike, and spotless". Went out for a spin last night and I could see her confidence was a lot higher on the Gladi, great to see. Unfortunately the bimble was cut short as we ran into hail and serious wind, so we turned back, when we reached the glen road home we had branches falling of the trees hitting us. The Fazer will be missed as I wanted to keep it for obvious reasons as you will see by the pictures.
