  hello
Posted by: stevie-g1968 - 26-12-13, 02:09 PM - Forum: Introduction - Replies (7)

right, hi im steve and im getting old (46)
im looking at bying an early fazer600 to replace a zzr600.
I have a bit of biking history so im not a compleat numpty :rollin
in the past ive owner a bandit 600 and a gsx1400 as well as a few tiddlers and the kawakrappy that is going...too uncomfortable for my aches.
anyway the reason im he on this forum is to do my homework and find out the good and bad points of the 600.
I did ride one a few hundred miles, but that was around 12 years ago....I do recall it being a nice ride.
anyway, enough rambling...im going to poke about a bit,

cheers, steve.

  Eazyrizer bike lift
Posted by: richfzs - 26-12-13, 02:04 PM - Forum: General - Replies (9)

Has anyone used one of these?

http://www.on-bike.com/products_original_red.htm

Looking to buy myself a Christmas present :-) it's a toss up between this and a more traditional lift (Clarke jobby from machine mart).

Any experience useful, especially on bigger Bikes like a pan European or bmw 1200rt! Am thinking of the footpeg mounts...

  Wanted XT600 rack
Posted by: Captain Haddock - 26-12-13, 12:46 PM - Forum: For Sale & Wanted - Replies (2)

Not fazer but worth a pop, does anyone have a rack for an XT600E kicking around in their shed that needs a new home? Doesn't need to be pretty or even that straight, but preferably cheap.
Just need something to adapt for carrying a small chainsaw for firewood hunting.

Front Brakes Refurb - Still rubbing :(
Posted by: stevejmason - 26-12-13, 12:06 PM - Forum: FZS600 Fazer - Replies (16)

Hi, Merry Christmas, etc.

(Firstly, I'm new to this site. I have had a '02 FZS600 since March '12, in which time I've only covered ~15k miles here in Hertfordshire/London.)

Considering the front brake system looked OEM from factory, and had probably not been touched (except pads/fluid) for it's 35k lifetime, my Christmas project this year was a small revamp Smile In which i've replaced the following:

  • Re-built both calipers with new seals. (Pistons cleaned up, all seemed ok)
  • EBC 'X-series' MD2001X discs.
  • All new disc mount bolts.
  • EBC FA252HH sintered pads.
  • L/R wheel bearings + oil seal.
  • HEL stainless brake lines.
  • RBF600 brake fluid.

Just finished off this morning, pads in and bled the system (which seems to take forever with bikes!), but the discs are obviously rubbing the pads when I spin the front wheel  :'(  . I tried resetting the pistons, but before even touching the brake lever again, there is still rubbing! (the whole way round).

Is it the FZS' destiny to always have rubbing front brakes?? I presume this will die down slightly once she's down a few hundred miles on the road? (Although the old setup also rubbed, which helped persuade me to do this project anyway!).

I'm also hoping this has nothing to do with the only part of the front brake system that I did not touch  :lol  (master cylinder!). Which, on the subject, with the brake adjuster dial set to '1' ("highest"), the master cylinder would not return completely, this has been remedied by changing the dial to the next setting '2' - But is this perhaps a hint that I should have rebuilt the master cylinder too?? (I'm cursing myself for being a miser). I guess there is still time.....to get covered in brake fluid again  Sad

Cheers, and happy holidays,
Stephen

P.S. here is a pretty picture of the new setup, because reading text is boring.

  2014 Euro Tour
Posted by: nick crisp - 25-12-13, 01:45 PM - Forum: General - Replies (53)

So, a week off, time to start planning my Euro trip for next year. I've now narrowed it down a bit, and have the outlines of a plan:

Part 1.
Ardennes

I've always wanted to visit the region in which the Battle of the Bulge took place, partly to see the terrain and places that events happened in, and because from what I've read there's some great scenery and good roads to ride in the area. I would like to visit a museum or two (apparently a new one being built in Bastogne to open in 2014, 70th anniversary year of the campaign, and I've read there's a good one in Diekirch, just north of Luxembourg). So this region will be my first destination. Plan on a Dover-Calais ferry, heading quickly into Belgium to avoid toll routes, and south to area bounded by (approx) Monschau-Bastogne-Echternach-Bitburg-St. Vith. Camping if the weather is good. One day to get there, say 3 days to explore. Then perhaps head down through Vosges region to ......

Part 2.
Alps

With Switzerland as main destination region, but haven't decided exactly how to do this yet. Concerned that Switzerland will be expensive, especially if combining camping with hotels/YHA hostels/B & B etc. Have had Route des Grandes Alps recommended to me, but actually want to head on a more easterly direction to/towards Austria, or south to the Italian Dolomites side. From what I've read and heard, once in the approximate region I can't go far wrong for fantastic scenery and good roads to ride, so probably won't plan this to the last detail before going, although I have been researching recommended routes/rides. I like to be able to wing it as the mood takes me as much as possible. 5-7 days to do this part, and perhaps 2 days to ride home in.

Not looking to do colossal mileages each day, 200-250 sounds ok for the most part, apart from ride to Ardennes and ride from there to Alps, which will be seen as the high mileage days.
14-16 days in total. Hoping to budget within about £1500 in total.

Would like to not have to book anything in advance as I'll be watching weather forecasts nearer the time and will go hopefully when a reasonably settled period looks likely (July?), but will also be researching for stopping places (campsites/hotels etc) so I at least have some idea of where to head each evening, so as not to waste too much time looking for a place to overnight each day.

The Touring Europe thread I started earlier this year has been useful in thinking about this, but any further help/advice/comments would be very much appreciated from those who have been to these regions, now that I have a better idea of where/what/how I want to do it.

Cheers in advance

Nick.
