Hi folks, having sorted my headlights, Fazer400, I put my multi meter on and noticed the charge was 14.5v at approx 3000 rpm.
Looking through the Haynes the 98 model is rated at 12v.
Is it a straight swap to do from a 2002/3 model as that would seem to be the only solution?
Cheers

| Yearly service & oil change newbie questions. |

Bike is due it's yearly service & MOT, however this year I want to have a go doing the service all myself, because it's high tie I did and I'm skint.
Now, regarding the oil change, as I've never done one before:
Oil filter, much in them? Should I just go for cheapest? Or worth paying a couple quid more for genuine, K&N etc?
So I understand I need a new sump plug washer, anyone bother with magnetic plug or are they just a gimmick?
I've heard getting old filter off can be a ball ache, any tips? What tool do I need (give me a link to buy one)? What about fitting new one, copper grease to aid future removal?
Air filter should be straight forward enough. My brakes have all had new pads recently. Checked carb balance earlier in year and was fine. Will inspect plugs. Will grease levers, pegs and stands. Fork seals aren't leaking, spot of pitting, but high up out the way. Chain/sprocket look cool, no hooked teeth, not slack, perhaps a bit gunked up but should be ok.
What else do I need to do?

Hi all,
i finally took the wire cutters to my datatool s4, everything was ok when the bike was in reg use(5 years no probs) got made redundant and bingo after a month or so on the optimiser it just had a mind of its own....so its in a bucket of water.
now as far as i can see it was connected to a led in the rear light, two drop ins(single yellow band and double) which i have remade and one off towards which i have no idea where to connect(it has 12.5 volts on it though), this im hoping some one can answer it get connected to?
cheers
J

Hello,
I was wondering if you're familiar with these symptoms that I recently started having:
1. Clutch doesn't release smoothly. It comes to ~90% of being released, then suddenly releases completely. It creates "kick" when starting on green light, and it is probably not good for whole transmission / chain.
I changed clutch plates a year ago, they're not worn. What could cause this ?
2. Something develops noise on exactly 6000rpm. It sounds like school ring, only less loud. It's fast paced metal noise, as if you take two metals and hit them gently one to each other very fast (maybe 10-20 times / second).
3. Last year my front left fork leg blew its oil seal. I had replaced seals and oil in local bike repair shop. Ever since, I don't feel confident in front end, although everything works as it should. Forks squeak when they run over dents (deeper dents, when they need to travel a lot) and something knocks somewhere in the front end (doesn't matter if brakes are applied or not).
4. I think that engine creates more vibrations in higher RPMs. I'm no mechanic, so pardon my ignorance, but does this engine sit on some kind of bushings? Maybe they need change? After all, it has ~35.000 miles.
5. The engine starts difficultly when it's hot. When it's cold, it's OK although not perfect, but when it's hot sometimes I have to start it several times for it to actually start, and when it does, it starts barely. You can almost hear cylinders firing up one by one until it stabilizes after 1-2 sec, then it's ok.
After that it works fine, it has power and doesn't exhaust strange smoke, although you can smell gasoline strongly until it stabilizes.
A friend says it's the problem with carburetor, it doesn't mix well or is in need of changing some rubbers inside (don't know exactly). What do you think?
6. My front brake lever feels "sticky" and bumpy on the start of the travel. It didn't do that until recently. Is there an easy way to fix this, maybe to lube something? Or do I need to take it to mechanic to bleed possible air ?
Thanks

| Not Starting After Sprocket Cover Removal |

I'm confused, I've had the sprocket cover off to replace the sprocket nut as it had come loose. I've put it back together after a week of not using it and it cranks but will not start. After playing around with it over and over eventually it started, I thought that would be it but same again this morning and when I got to work I turned it off switched straight back on and again same, it wouldn't start. I'm hoping it'll start when I finish later!
The only things I've done to get it started are playing with the sidestand, cranking over and over and pulling in the clutch but there isn't one of those things that solves the problem it just seems to go eventually. I'm was thinking maybe it's the sidestand switch but would it not crank if thats the case? Anyway I can bypass or test this?

Hello I'm new to the forum and new to the fazer 1000.
I've had my '53 plate for a few weeks now and have just noticed a single click noise. When coasting slowly in 2nd with clutch in, if I just touch the throttle a little I hear this single click noise.
Any ideas or help would be appreciated
Thanks
