Any advice will be greatfully recieved!

Yesterday, having a bit of a ride out, I stopped off at the Park and Ride carpark near Winchester to practice some slow speed riding and, when I'd finished, I decided to try something I'd always meant to give a go...
There's a long straight section with a line across it, so I ran the bike up to 30mph and as I crossed the line, did an emergency stop, then got off and measured it. I also did the same at 40mph.
Unsurprisingly, although the Highway Code says that on a dry road in good conditions it takes 23m to stop at 30mph and 36m at 40mph, I found that my stopping distances were (including allowing distance for my reaction time of 0.24 seconds) actually 18m and 25m respectively.
Now, ok, I know that those the HC figures were based on a 1960's car with 1960's brakes and tyres on a 1960's road surface and I know that they're unlikely to change them because they'd prefer people to err on the side of caution (and not everyone has good reactions) but at least I know now what my stopping distances actually look like at those speeds and it gives me a better idea of how much space I allow to enable me to "stop in the distance I can see clear on my side of the road".

Front brake caliper rebuild. |

Ok i stripped my front brakes down to clean them as i have been getting a squeal from the front from starting about 40ish, when i noticed that on both sides i am getting uneven pad wear.
So have ordered some replacement seals of the internet and i am going to attemp to strip and replace all the relevant seals on both brake calipers, soooooo i have been reading my haynes manual and was wondering if anyone had any hints / tips that they found helped when do their brakes.
Reason for asking there is a small section that is a bit grey to me, basically the manual says to clamp a bit of wood over one side to prevent the pistons on one side from moving, then to apply pressure to the brake lever until the oter side "pop" out, it then says to remove the seals and replace the pistons, clamp the wood on this side and repeat to get the other pistons out.
the grey area for me is once i get the first set of pistons out what stops air getting back into the system........and yes i intend to replace the brake fluid with fresh stuff.
Cheers

Real men |

Just caught the end of an interview with James May on radio 2 talking about 'real men' and manliness. Got me thinking, what is a 'real man' and have our views changed on this over the past few decades? Discuss...
I'll start you off with a few atributes I would include if I were to describe a 'real man':-
- knows how things work, (engines, lighting circuits, boilers)
- owns and knows how to use tools and fix stuff (even if he prefers to pay someone else to do it)
- would protect/defend anyone if he felt they needed help
- does NOT think that holding a door open/giving up a chair/offering to help undo a jar or change a wheel for a woman is sexist
I think I have changed my views on this over the years and have come to the conclusion that expecting men to do the above as well as cook, clean, be in touch with their feminine side is probably unreasonable. Not saying they can't do this, just that expecting it may be unfair. Just my view.
