  Hello from up North!
Posted by: Chris - 03-02-13, 09:30 AM - Forum: Introduction - Replies (19)

Hi everyone,

My names Chris and I live in Shetland. Bought a blue 2002 FZS600 last year and have loved every second of it. It's my first big bike since I passed my direct access the previous year. I have found this website so helpful and I couldn't resist becoming a proper focer! Will upload a pic or two later if anyone is interested?

I've been pottering away this winter stripping bits to clean/replace and am learning how to do a lot of work myself with help of my dad. So far i've had the wheels off and powder coated gloss black as the standard satin black just never looked clean to me, blueflame exhaust, stripped and cleaned front and rear calipers, new front pads, hel braided line for the rear, clear indicator lenses (made a huge difference to the look of the bike), black double bubble screen, K&N air and oil filter and got some nice blue LED's to spruce up the dials! Think that's most of it so far!

Take care,

Chris

  Speedo correction (16 tooth)
Posted by: slimwilly - 03-02-13, 09:20 AM - Forum: General - Replies (4)

So a couple of months ago i put a 16 tooth front sprocket on my FZ1s so i took a satnav on the tank pad to check out the speed correction.

I found the bike to be over reading as expected , the speedo read 44 to satnav 40    ,speedo 55 to satnav 50 and so on, so there is a 10% over read, easy to calculate when riding.

I got the speedo to read 142 and the satnav recorded 128 max speed of trip.(on a closed airfield of course) :\

On my Hilux pickup the sat nav reads slightly less than the speedo for cross reference,50 on the speedo and 48 on the sat nav so that 4% is my safety factor on riding at speed limits.

SO as written about the sprocket change making a 5.4% over read and the inbuilt 5% over read on the bike speedo i know where i am.

And as for the 16 tooth mod well, i takes away the need to change down to over take  ( in most cases anyway) and makes for a smoother ride.

I have recorder 130 miles on the milo and the fuel is flashing ,so have to check what is left in the tank as i want 150 miles to the tank or if not then the 17tooth is going back on.

Four of us are riding to Mugello end of May, going through Switzerland , my mates gsxr 750 needs to stop at 150 miles so should be ok.

  Oil
Posted by: Tilts - 03-02-13, 09:03 AM - Forum: Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner - Replies (4)

Can anyone advise?

Collecting my first Fazer 1000 tommorow, and first job will be to drop the oil and filters, and remove side casings, rub down and respray. Now I have some
Putoline and Motorex 10 50w fully synthetic oil, could this be used? And what spray would you recommend for the side cases.
Cheers

Hope we will still travel many happy miles together & look forward to meeting up with someof you at the NMCM this year. Yes its great to be called a SILLY OLD FOCCER! :lol

  A three-quarter mile workout
Posted by: Fazerider - 03-02-13, 01:35 AM - Forum: FZS600 Fazer - Replies (23)

As I came over the crest of the flyover at the start of the M3 this evening the bike spluttered and died. I knew I was low on fuel, but the light had only come on 10 miles before that and I haven't filled up that early for years... I feel I'm pushing my luck after 45 miles, but I was so certain I'd the range left to get home and fill up in the morning that I'd happily ignored the Shell station just two miles previously.
Anyhow, I coasted to a halt and pushed the bike backwards along the on-ramp at Sunbury and, after a bit of sloshing the dregs of fuel around in the tank, enough found its way into the carbs for another 200 yards under intermittent power before I had to resort to shoving the dead weight myself again.
I've never been so glad to see a Tesco filling station price pillar, though it took me a while to find the station itself... it doesn't come into sight until another 5 minutes by which time I was soaked with sweat from the effort. Then I discovered they were just closing... kind of annoying that they advertise themselves as open 24 hours yet shut at 10:30 on a Saturday evening. Fortunately the guy locking the pumps took pity on me and let me fill up and the remaining 25 miles of my commute home were uneventful aside from the sub-zero temperature chilling my saturated clothing.
Why the metering system should have turned on the low fuel light so much later this time is a puzzle. I can't imagine anyone stole 2 litres of fuel from the tank while it was parked at work today and I've not smelt any leakage. The warning light had been such a dependable guide until now (much more use than the gauge itself) that it's a shame to think it can no longer be trusted.

  locks
Posted by: ghostbiker - 03-02-13, 01:19 AM - Forum: General - Replies (17)

In the market for a new lock for the bike. At home its in a garage now with a ground anchor. And the garage is locked but only with the normal garage lock and a floor bolt and padlock.

But while out and about I used to have the data tool uno immobilizer and a cheapish bike it disc lock.
Now the data tool is no more and the bike it disc lock is worn and was crap to start with Tongue

So in the market for a new lock. Needs to be easy to carry and easy to accses. So I am thinking disc lock again. But maybe something a bit better than the last one that can be broken in 2 by droping it from a hight not much greater than the top box LOL.

Oxford boss seems to get ok reviews and is a sensible price, they do normal and an alarm version.
About 50 or 70 give or take a tenner from what I have seen.
There is also the oxford screamer that's cheap and alarmed.
But I prefer the boss as it doubles up as a chain lock to if needed.

What do you guys use? Recomend? Are the alarm ones any use?  Do you get bigger discounts on them than the non alarm ones with insurance etc
Lots of cheap tat around that I want to avoid but don't want to spend a huge amount either.

Small puddle of water on floor by left side of centre stand!?
Posted by: Hobgoblin - 02-02-13, 11:58 PM - Forum: FZS600 Fazer - Replies (11)

Hi all, after a ride of 50 miles or so today, and a good 6 hrs after getting home, I'm in the garage and hear a ' trickle '. There appears a small puddle on the left of the centre stand, which came from an overflow pipe above. It seems to go onto a splitter, then into a plastic box behind the carbs underneath the battery tray area. Is there any reason for this, and is it normal? I changed the coolant last week, but the levels are spot on tonight after the first ride in  about a month.
Can anyone put my mind at rest?!
Thanks, Keith.
