Have to admit that I was desperate to scrub my chicken strips off... dunno why... but I've only managed the rear and that was due to some hairpins on a road near me, I'm guessing the front only scrubs with faster corners...  I'm really fast in a straight line though... :b

I reckon the 600 will always be more than enough bike for me to handle.

front end of mine is rubbish.. is it too late to add myself to this?

I took my bike for new tyre at muldoons in kirkintilloch..  They've been into bikes for years racing side cars at the TT and all..  I mentioned that the fazer was a bit boggy in the midrange,  The old guy pull out some Forte fuel additive and poured the whole bottle into the tank  I'd just filled the tank up.  he said it was more than was recommended but he also said that as my pbike hadn't done much work in it's life and probably had spent a lot of time sitting in a garage, ( it only had 5800 mile on it when i got it.) that the carbs get slowly gummed up, mainly due to the additives in petrol nowadays.  anyway suffice to say the bike has been through three tanks of petrol since and is no longer sluggish in the midrange.  It also ticks over better and goes like stink.  I've also fitted a K&N. but didn't notice any difference except a slightly different engine note..

Thanks for the tip.  Was looking at the crash bobbins thinking the very same. So I'll have to remove them. Then I'll probably drop it!! might be interested in uprated rear suspension if you've still got it..

On second thoughts,  Just looked at the price... sadly a bit too rich for me.. might be able to stretch to the dogbones though if they're still available.

Had a wee run oot at the weekend with another fazer owner. Balfron, Perth, Pitlochry, Braemar, Tomintoul, Granton on Spey then 20 miles up the A9 to Inverness.  Turned into a petrol station in Inverness and the bike cut out and wouldn't go again.  No bump starting it no light, Kaput!  A good guy stopped with jump leads which managed to start it but as soon as they were disconnected it cut out.  Rac was called and said the alternator was ok but the battery was maybe goosed.  Halfords across the road amazingly had a bosch agm battery for the bike for the princely sum of £55 which was a lot more desirable than the prospect of a 220 mile drive home in an RAC lorry.  Battery in and bob's yer uncle.  Amazing weather on the way there, on the way back went via Loch Ness, Glencoe, Aberfoyle ( the Dukes Pass) and home.  The dukes pass scrubbed what was left of my chicken strips and even gave me a wee scare on the hero blobs.

425 miles  in 12 hours some of the best scenery in the world and the best roads in the world.  New bridgestone bt23's with a mere 80 miles on them a breakdown, a fix, and a day to remember.. Thank god the sun hardly ever shines here, if it did it it would be too busy....

Hello,  As the title says i guess..

My new bike, a y2k 600, was making an odd noise occasionally, looking at the posts on here i deduced it was something to do with the chain.  So I took off the chain cover, destroying the gasket in the process, to find all manner of cak in there.  Loads of heavy oil and crud as well as a good few wee pebbles.  So I cleaned all the sheckter out, cleaned then lubed the chain(with muck off, good old halfords!) and gasket sealed the cover.  I sat the bike on it's centre stand and stuck it in first,  the chain started flapping about, jumping up and down, intermittently, but quite a lot more than i expected - like it had some sticky links, but it wasn't regular.  The play is ok and the chain seemed to be in good enough nick.  the sprocket nut is original and the bike has only done 6000 miles.  I rode it and it seemed fine. is it flapping just cause there is not enough  load.  oh, and do i have to replace the paper gasket or would gasket seal be ok?

while i was in there the output shaft looks like it might have a wee leak. Do I just pop the gasket and drift in a new one?  thanks in advance.

Well,  I called the dealer who had previously offered me a 2000 plate fazer with 6000 miles on it the day after i'd bought mine and told him the craic.  He looked in his wee book and said he'd give me £100 less than I paid for it if I wanted to trade it in for his one.  Now I know that it's going to cost me a few quid to exchange but I'm weighing it up.  The  dealers bike has double bubble screen, scorpion end can ( although with a dent) fender extender, smoked indicators and has 2 owners and low miles.  Last owner had it restricted and just traded in for an r6.  THe tyres are better it has 1 years MOT , will be serviced and have a parts and labour warranty.   If I choose to keep mine I'll be buying tyres fitted, servicing it thoroughly as it has done 300 miles in 3 years as per my previous thread and in the end the money will balance itself out.

In a way I'm tempted to spend on the one I have just to teach my self a lesson!!  but then.... life is too short no?  I could buy a newer bike with fewer miles that looks better and hasn't been crashed which needs nothing for the next year and is ready to ride.....hmmmm

well the bike looks like it was only a few months old when the accident happened.  so i'm guessing there was enough damage to run up a big bill although as you say the cost of dealer parts would be high.  all the plastics have been painted and there are no 'fazer' decals so i'm assuming the front fairings took some impact.  The rest may have been painted to match the colour.  I doubt i'll find the owner from new unless the selling dealer has a record.  we'll see what happens .

thanks guys.. some good advice and positive vibes there thanks.  I was seriously pissed off earlier. now i'm only mildly pissed off. :rolleyes

I might have no choice but to keep it if i can't sell it for close to what i paid.  I've only ridden it round the block (4 miles with some twisties and some straights) a couple of times but it seemed to ride well ( apart from the flattened back tyre affecting the turn in a little (at least i hope it is that)).  The frame is in good nick with no visible dents or marks. there is no play in the bearings anywhere.  I dunno.  maybe i should just get it checked over and keep it. put a few thousand miles on it so i can sell it on with confidence...

Where would i find out what the damage was?

All is not lost.

thanks jonestheteam.  Makes me feel a wee bit better.  So better to get it checked over and then service it.  A letter from the dealer saying it is ok sounds like a good idea.  All is not lost then.

it was a private sale.  says on his ad that the bike had never been dropped - but he didn't own it when it was crashed.  I just spoke to him and he said he'd done very little to the bike.  It sat in his garage more than it was ridden.  He never knew about the cat c damage or he wouldn't have bought it!!!  He also said that it rides ok and that it must have been repaired to a legal standard for it still to be on the road.

I don't have any recourse as far as getting my money back is concerned.  Strangely I believe the guy.

I'm not really sure where to go from here.

I could try and sell it with the hpi check available and obviously take a hit.  Or break it for spares.  Or set fire to it and get a wee heat from the flames.

I'm a twat.  I've bought a lot of second hand cars in the past and a few bikes too, but this one i did all wrong and knew it, i took a chance.  That's not to say the repairs were not done well,  but I wouldn't have bought it if I'd known.   I guess that explains why the paint doesn't feel factory (bits of dust in the finish) and there are no decals on the fairing.  Might also explain the low mileage although there is a discrepancy in that too. mileage went down by 1k between 2008 and 2010.

Never look at a bike as the sun is going down.
always get  and hpi check.

for £5 I'd be sitting on a black fazer from a local dealer with guarantees.. Instead I'm going to have to work out what to do with this one and save up for another.

Just glad I didn't use my service parts, or change the tyres before I checked.  every cloud eh!!!

thanks for all the replies.  some food for thought there.  I'm not sure if i can afford to redo the rear shock but i'll see.  what tyres are recommended?  bridgestone fitted from the bike are around £260.  is this about right?

I've set the ball rolling.  K&N oil and air filters on their way.  got some oil and some rad flush, some gunk and lube for the chain and sourced a new sprocket nut at the dealers(not free! oh and they did say that there had hardly ever been anyone with the problem through their doors, but then i suppose in a way they would,  although the guy didn't sound like he was a die hard company mechanic).

Also got myself a haynes manual..

can't wait to get started.....

FZS600 Fazer / First fazer

Hello.

I've recently bought a '99 fazer breaking every rule in the 'buying a used vehicle' book.  So now I'm retrospectively attempting to check the things i should have in the first place, hopefully with the help of the foccers on here.

It starts fine on choke, and ticks over ok. Brakes are fine and the front sprocket nut is there although only the 9mm one.  (it's giving off a rusty glow so probably seized on).

The previous owner told me the back tyre had been on the bike for 8 years!  there is still plently of tread on it, but it's slightly flattened in the middle.  I'm guessing I should replace it.  The chain and sprockets look ok... the bike has only done 7000 miles and been garaged since 2004, but should i replace these too?

This is my first road bike.  I've had off road bikes for 20 years, my last one being and xr400r but after much research I settled on this.  I perhaps should have been more thorough when i bought it but i just saw low mileage fazer which is pretty clean, no dents, although the decals on the front fairing are missing, and one advisory on the new MOT being the throttle is slipping slightly on the handle bar.

So for starters, I'm guessing i need to change the oil and filter.  ( i've read the threads and it looks like a k and n filter and either asda of castrol 10w30)...  should the filter be changed with every oil change?

Should i also replace the coolant and brake fluid?

The dust covers on the forks are looking a bit tired although there is no leaking but i'm guessing these will need to be replaced too. what would it cost to have a garage do these?  The laquer is coming off the fork legs.  is there any cure for this other than rubbing down and re laquering?

I want to get the basics right cause if this is a genuine bike  and turns out to be ok i plan on keeping it for a while.  I took it for a quick blast yesterday, couldn't resist, and it felt great.  It'll take a bit of getting used to the extra weight in the corners but I'm up for that.

Hopefully she's a good un but only time will tell.  All help will be greatly appreciated.... mon the foccers!
