Too cold to kayak?

Bah! I first learnt to kayak in January at night with snow on the ground when I was in the cubs, mind you that was back in the early 70s & we weren't mollycoddled & soft like the following cotton wool generations!  :lol

the general rule of thumb for a transverse engine is that it'll lose 10% of its rear wheel power by using a shaft instead of a chain, mostly due to having 2 90deg bevel drives, rather than a linear drive with a chain.

Using an engine with a longitudinal crank eg. BMW boxer or CX500/Guzzi V-twin means there's only one bevel gear so less loss, in fact to run one of those engines with a chain would still require a bevel gear anyway as you'd need one to drive the front sprocket in the correct plane, so power wise there would be minimal difference.

+1 on the SW-Motech kit, it's well made & as Tmation's pics show, if you remove the adaptor plate when you're not using the top-box it's as unobtrusive as you're gonna get.

You can also get fittings for all the big makes of luggage too.

Stopped here on a stag do a few years back, it's a converted orphanage on the edge of the centre, but easily walkable or a cheap taxi ride & they've also got a pretty good nightclub in what used to be the church on the site.

I've had the HG Voyager V for 3 or 4 years now & it's never leaked even when riding in heavy rain all day.

Boots, for winter are Daytona Roadstars & though they may be an expensive initial outlay they are easily the cheapest boots I've ever owned!  I bought them at the NEC show in 1995 for £170, used them every winter since including for a 90 mile commute for a big portion of that time & they're still waterproof going into their 18th winter season, so I figure they've cost me less than £9.50 a year.  Prior to getting them I'd get at most 3 years from a pair of winter boots at £100-120 a set none of which were ever 100% waterproof, so the 'expensive ' Daytonas have in the long run worked out about a quarter of the price of cheap ones!  :)

The sole is getting a bit thin on the heel now, so I reckon come spring they'll be going back to Daytona as they do a complete refurb for abou £120-150, I'm 51 now so I reckon that will probably see me through the rest of my winter biking life, ~£300 for 35+ years of warm dry feet in winter has to be a bargain!  :D

I agree that in theory that sounds like a good idea, but would you really want to leave your lid sitting sitting in the middle of a busy hard shoulder 100 metres away?

« on: 01 December 2012, 08:32:06 pm »
If you get on the Machine Mart mailing list then every 2-3 months they have a special offer where you can buy any of their own  (ie. Clarke) range VAT free or 10% off anything else.

I've had one of their lifts for the last 10 years & am very happy with it, the only real change I'd make is to have the steerable wheels on the back rather than the front, as then you can run the bike up onto the lift & then swing the back around by 90 degrees, would allow for better space usage in my garage.

I did take a pic of the hp4 it's a beaut of a bike ill dig a picture out and post up, 2 versions, have you had he full monty 20k !  I do no I'd not be riding it in the rain and for me there's only one hp4 and that was the last version with the boxter engine 'twas a wok of art.

You're right, there is only one HP4 however,  it's the S1000RR as the boxer engined one was the HP2!  ;)

As for the OP, is there such a thing as a 195 tyre? I presume you mean 190.  If the rim is the same size as the cooking version then I wouldn't see much problem using a 190 PR3 on the HP4, though seeing as the 200 isn't that rare a tyre size these days Im surprised that Michelin don't do the PR3 in it.

In my experience the bods on the stands are sales droids rather than techies & will just repeat what's in the brochure, so you'd be far better off knocking out a mail to BMW &/or Michelin directly & asking them.

Yes, one of the reasons I went for it was because I'd recently bought a set of Titax levers & didn't want to have to fork out another £60 for a new clutch one to fit a different perch!  :)

bbbrown - the whole world has gone soft  :'( :'( it is a given fact isnt it that if you knew you would be put on an aircraft carrier and used for target practise ,you would be deterred from doing  armed robbery or whatever else these scum bags do  :D

You somehow take it for granted that criminals are being rational. They do fear the punishment, but it's not like they all make calculated career choices when breaking the law. It doesn't work that way.

Precisely!!

The single largest group of prisoners these days  (~50%) are druggies that are mugging/shoplifting/burgling in order to score their next fix, throw in the fact that most violent crime is comitted by people that have been drinking.  It shows how little understanding of the situation that the Daily Mail  readers have that they think either of these groups take time to consider the possible outcome of their actions.

As does the suggestion to extend sentences for bad behaviour rather than reduce it for good.  In order to make someone spend time behind bars it's neccessary to follow the legal process of charging them with an offence, trying & convicting them in a court & finally sentencing them.  Therefore if someone is serving a sentence & commits an offence that's not an imprisonable one, you can't extend their sentence.  If they do then you have to go through the judicial process &  follow the laws of the land to do it, allowing time off for good behaviour sidesteps all this time, effort & expense as they've already been sentenced.  It also helps the prison staff too, as it reduces general low level disruptive behaviour which in itself may not be a criminal offence, but can currently be punished by loss of remission.

Just the part over 30K, it's counted as earned income, so subject to tax & NI.

I voted for the best independent, and gave my second vote to the second best independent. I don't think party politics should have any role in this choice. As far as money is concerned, I thought this elected single commissioner was replacing a larger (unelected) board ?
And as for zero tolerance, I'd be very wary of that. What does it exactly mean ? The police have to have leeway. Does zero tolerance mean I'll be done for doing 31 in a 30 ?  :rolleyes

Usually it means anything other people do....

Moving away from it being a good idea or not, the main thing I don't understand is why run up all the extra expense of having seperate elections for the posts & not just wait until the normal local elections come around in May & combine the police commisioners election with that?

I guess that depends who the alley belongs too, if it's the council then complain to them that they're not keeping a public right of way clear.

I did the same as Spoonlamp visited the individual websites and chose from there.
A 18.8% turn out in Bristol to vote.

Well done to Sue Mountstevens she is a Bristol-born businesswoman who ran her own chain of bakeries in Bristol, Bath and Somerset area.

IMHO who ever makes good cakes cant be bad.  :lol

Actually it appears we're mistaken  & you can!

http://www.problemneighbours.co.uk/rights-trees-and-overhanging-branches.html

Overhanging Branches If the branches of a neighbour’s tree start to grow over to your side, you can cut them back to the boundary point between you and your neighbour’s property, as long as the tree is not under a tree preservation order. If it is, you’ll need to seek further clarification. However, the branches and any fruit on them which you may have cut down on your side still belong to the tree owner so they can ask you to return them. Alternatively, you can return them and ask your neighbour to dispose of them themselves should you wish to do so. What might seem a bit of a strange anomaly, however, is that even though any leaves from your neighbour’s tree may fall into your garden in autumn, you have no right to ask them to come around and sweep them up.

My understanding is that you're aloowed to cut anything that overhangs your property, but have to 'offer' them the cuttings, don't think they have to accept them so you can't just dump them on their lawn!  :)

I got a clutch perch from a gen 2 naked, that has the mirror mount built into it, I then also got a set of std gen2 naked black (they also come in chrome) mirrors.

The RH side mount is reverse threaded thread & the LH side is normal, you can get adapters to fit normal mirrors eg:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/10mm-to-10mm-Yamaha-Mirror-Reverse-Thread-Adapter-x2-/360387640305

Just pasting that as an example of the item, it was the first link that came up, certainly not recommending them, particularly when the listing states:

PLEASE Don't expect / assume this is a Quality Item, Buy OEM item if you want to get quality product.    :lol :lol :lol

As for why?  They're far better than the std gen1 mirrors, I can actually see clearly what's behind me now without having to shift my body out of the way & I think it looks better too.

General / Re: An example of just how stupid some drivers are
« on: 17 November 2012, 07:26:56 pm »
Reminds me of one Saturday a few years back, I was driving up the M1 & the warning signs were showing "Motorway closed after next junction"  so I got over into the LH lane expecting it to be chaos as everyone tried to get off, but it wasn't much more busy than normal & most of the traffic carried on up the M1!

Now I could understand if it said "Motorway busy, expect delays" or " one lane closed" that some folk would think that it was worth risking a delay, but which bit of 'closed' didn't they understand?  :rolleyes

After a bit of cross-country improvisation I made it to Leicester without too much delay & the next day's news was full of people moaning about how dreadful it was that they'd been stuck on the M1 for hours, personally I'd have gone along & revoked all their licences on the spot for driving whilst stupid & put them on a bus home....  :)
