I called my local motorbike garage at the weekend, the engine is running a little rough, nothing major, just hunting a little at idle. and as I don't have the first clue about servicing carbs and we are in the process of moving house I felt it would be easier to pay for a small service (separate thread detailing that I've changed the oil so explained that this wasn't required).
After explaining to the guy who runs the joint the slightly rough idle, he explained that with an engine of that mileage (37k) it is likely that a valve could be sticking and causing the rough idle, that people oft blame carbs, do a tune and nothing changes. So, naturally, I asked what would be involved in a service and how much it would cost...
big intake of breath...
TO service it, check valve clearances, any required shims, fluids, air filter, tune up and time... £370!!!
I politely said no thanks, hung up the phone and started chewing over my options, option 1 as I see it is live with the rough idle until we have moved, and do the service myself (a viable option as I'm having to buy a car for the school run), option 2 pay the man (not foc-ing likely), option 3 come on here, check how hard it is to do the work (carb tune, valve clearance check and the necessary replacement of anything i find wrong), option 4 ask all you find people if anyone knows of a garage in Leeds that doesn't charge the earth!!
I've just put a deposit down on a rather tasty fzs1000, so thought I should start researching bits and pieces before I pick it up at the weekend.
I've been rocking about on an 02 plate Bandit 600 for the last year since getting my full license, and just coded it was time for a change.
The bandit is very clean, but there's a few little bits that aren't tip top, and won't even be unless I spend a lot more than the bikes worth, and being into detailing (cars mainly, aside from my own bikes, but looks like I might have a decent opening into doing some bikes as well) it annoys me.
So yeah, found a really nice 51 plate fzs1000 and have been offered good money (owing to tidiness!) for the bandit, so seemed like a good to time go up in the motorbiking world.
The fazer has 15k on the clock, is that funky purpley blue colour, adjustable pegs, Beowulf exhaust, scottoiler, crash bars, shorter screen with the extension bit (the name escapes me!), heated grips, carbon rear hugger, belly pan, new Michelin tyres and is in very good condition indeed.
I'll get some pictures up of both bikes soon.
Look forward to getting to know some peeps on here.
I was giving my FZS1000 its winter deep clean and noticed a couple of things so was just wondering !!! its a Gen 1 2002 model by the way.
Questions are 1) Should the rear brake caliper have a protective dust cover on its underside that stops all the crap getting up into the caliper ? I have had numerous bikes before that have had one.
2) On the inside of the rear footrest hangers there is a threaded bolt hole which looks to have had something fitted to them at some point as there is a 'bolt head' mark where i presume something once resided. What was it that was fitted or am i misreading something. It looks like an ideal place for some bungee hooks or something similar but mine obviously doesn't have anything and its just a threaded hole ?
Looking into it seems the recess for radio speakers etc. causes wind to swirl around. got some of the above pads and it has greatly improved it. in truth you could probably get away with sticking a bit of foam in the hole.
2002 Very good condition, a few blemishes but nothing that spoils the overall look, low mileage 12583, genuine 3 owners from new, I've owned it for the last 4 years. Good tyres, chain sprocket, regularly maintained, MOT until June 2013 and all previous MOT's to prove mileage Currently SORN always garaged, 2 keys PSH. Sensible mods, hugger, crash bungs otherwise standard. Very good bike only selling as I now have a Blackbird and need the space / money. £1875 o.v.n.o. Contact John, will send pictures on request, it may take me a while to work out how to upload them
