Info for an FZR400 overbore project - FZS600 Cylinder height and rod length
Posted by: ruckusman - 03-03-21, 10:47 PM - Forum: FZS600 Fazer - Replies (2)

Hi guys,
Hello from sunny, at the moment, Sydney Australia.

I'm trying to hopefully get some info on the FZS600 cylinders, rods and pistons for an overbore project on a 3TJ1 FZR400.
I'm trying to avoid ending up with a workshop full of parts just for the purposes of taking measurements, especially when many bits will need to come from OS.
As an outline, because it's essentially de-stroking a YZF600/FZS600 from 49.6mm to 40.5mm, I'm trying to avoid removing bulk material from the cylinders to maintain the gasket mating surface.

What I know for certain - Yamaha in their wisdom built an incredibly versatile crank, with many dimensions which are maintained across many many bikes. So the conrod big ends go onto the FZR400 crank - no issues. Conrod little ends are 17mm bore, so compatible with YZF600 pistons if necessary.

Regarding the FZS600 rod and piston measurements, this is only if someone has either an engine in parts or can point me in the right direction to a service manual or the like for the dimensions on the internals.

I have some of the details from another forum where the FZR600 crank was used to build a stroker YZF600, but as you can imagine it's a very old post. The measurement details are missing, however in that case they built a spacer plate.

Ideally I'm looking for just the height of the FZS600 cylinder block to begin with because the OP just says that they're 2cm (must be a typo), likely meaning 2mm shorter than the YZF600 cylinder block, the height of which I don't yet know either.

Past that he mentions that the FZS600 conrods are 3mm shorter than the YZF600 conrods. So eye to eye conrod length measurement of the FZS600 rods if available/possible.
Then there is the last element, the compression height of the FZS600 pistons.
If anyone has a reliable source for the info, or can take the basic measurements I'd very much appreciate it.

Glenn

Hello - here for some FZR400 project info hopefully
Posted by: ruckusman - 03-03-21, 10:16 PM - Forum: Introduction - No Replies

Hi Guys,
I'm in Sydney Australia and the FZS600 isn't a common bike over here unfortunately.

Anyway, I'm planning building an overbored FZR400 3TJ1, taking it to 490 using either FZS600 nikasil or YZF600r cylinders &/or rods and pistons.
It looks like I've come to the right place as this looks to be a very friendly and helpful forum.
Will be posting in the correct forum for the info

  Electric vehicles vs Internal Combustion...

Here's a very interesting video countering the objections that some people have to electric vehicles because of the pollution from generating electricity.

  Sprocket Advice

Had an advisory on the rear socket today. Only got 12k on the clock.

Is this normal wear?

Any advice on replacement, is it worth going up or down teeth?  Any brands to avoid?

Is it an easy job to replace? I've no way of splitting the chain so is it possible to replace without doing this?

  Won't start, with loud bang's
Posted by: Jays83 - 28-02-21, 06:31 PM - Forum: Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner - Replies (25)

Hello fellow fazerians,

My 03 fazer is having serious problems. Today i was going for a ride and she just would'nt start, when all off the sudden it made a really loud bang. After many try's it finally started with no strange noises. While driving, after about 10-15 minutes it suddenly started to go nuts, the engine dies and than with an loud bang it started running again. A lot of times the engine died and i've had to start it by putting it in gear and let go of the clutch. This went on for about 10 minutes and now it won't start at all.
If i try to start it now i smell fuel from the exhaust so i guess that it's getting fuel.
I've checked the plugs and they all spark, i've checked them on both bobines(not sure how it's called in english, coils maybe)
I also cleaned the ground connection but that did'nt help either.
Does anybody know where to look for the solution.

  Thinking of getting a Tenere 700 or a CB500x
Posted by: fireblake - 28-02-21, 05:57 PM - Forum: General - Replies (4)

Any of you lovely peeps have experience with either of these bikes. I'm a stumpy short arse so would probably have the T7 lowered. If I bought the Honda I would get Rally Raid to chuck everything they make at it. I plan on doing some off roading like the TET so want it to be able to haul my fat arse anywhere I want to go plus all my camping gear and stuff to be away from home for a month or more. Your thoughts and suggestions are most welcome?

click the link and go to your model then bookmark
its the easiest way to find part numbers etc
and for the expensive stuff that is harder to get 2nd hand you can cross reference other bikes that use the same part and widen ebay searches
(not a huge problem for the fazer but has come in handy for my 82 gsx1100 and godsons ybr125)

temp & condensation , short runs v long runs
Posted by: butthead - 26-02-21, 05:50 PM - Forum: General - Replies (4)

so i have heard that short runs or static runs ( ticking over not riding )  are bad for the bike due to condensation issues as the bike doesnt get properly hot or hot enough.
wanting to learn more about this, at what point does the condensation occur ?  heating up or cooling down or both.
does going for a long run eradicate this condensation or minimize it ?
so i was thinking that if it occurs at a certain temp range at some point even after a very long run it will cool back down at some point to that problem temp range so wont that create condensation?  long run or short run either way?
or is it created ONLY on warm up not cooling back down, and gets eradicated by increased temperature that too short a run doesnt give you ?

how long a run is enough of a run , and do we worry about this on a daily basis on our short commutes to work and back in our cars ? how many short journeys are made daily in cars ?

anyone have any expertise on offer in this area .  just an interesting topic id like more information on
