As I have the back wheel off for a new tyre I have given the back brake a well overdue clean up.
It passed its MOT only last week so it works fine despite the look of it.
I first thought that the pads were badly rusted but it seems like paper on the back but I suspect it's paint.
Before and after pad clean up.
I don't do rain or threat there of. dry rider only with no shame.

And the before and after caliper
After a clean up I pumped them out a little and put some red rubber grease on and pushed them back in a little. Had to use a clamp to get them to go in.
The reason they got left is that during COVID I brought a complete rebuild kit, pistons, seals O ring for the split caliper and hel braided hoses but have never got around to fitting it all.
But before I fit new pads I will need to put new pistons in as the corrosion will probably damage the seals when I push them in to make room.

A caliper rebuild wouldn't go amiss, if I knew which scrappers they'd taken mine to I'd let you know, full rebuild with new pistons and seals, FZS 1000 rear blue spot .600 ones always prone to sticking and feeling a bit spongey .

Did you check how how the corrosion goes on the outside of the pistons? if it goes below the dust seal, these will wear out in short order, if it goes below the brake sea, its time for replacement pistons.

Yes its only on the outside

Yes its only on the outside. But I did push them in just a little after I gave them a good clean as I wanted to check that they would move so a very small section of the exposed bit may have just touched the first seal.
In use its all on the outside.
Most of the "state" of the pistons is from the flaking paint with rust from the back of the pads

I haven’t taken it out for a test ride yet. I do have a whole rebuild kit and a braided line to put on - had it since lockdown but spent too much time searching for loos rolls so didn’t get around to doing it.
