Checking the Metro website, they don't appear to have any branches in Ierland.

With a similar scenario, I have managed to salvage our local motorcycling forum - but I did cut out the images as that allowed me to keep the storage and hence hosting and backup costs low. Donations are zero, and there are no adverts for now, but the costs are also close to zero so I can keep it running (though the starter/owner is paying for the domain registration renewal - and while I have the admin role for the technical side, I don't really do moderation/administration).

There, I got full access so I could see what I'm dealing with before taking it on so to speak (that was easy because we know each other personally so trust was not an issue).

Here, I'm not really sure what we're dealing with and what the options are.
For example: if the choice boils down to shutting it down and just removing images - then too bad for the images Smile  (just the first, oversimplified example, it needn't be black and white).

Similar thoughts about the adverts - without insisting, if the costs are high, and no donations are existing (or reasonable to expect), do we rather let it be gone, or make a compromise?

I did mention Cloudflare before - it coud reduce server load and thus expenses, at the cost of the huge corproration being able to intercept and see the pigeon pics I send via PMs every now and then.   Smile

I can't take moderation/administration burden - that part is not on the table.

My money and time are also limited, unfortunately.

Helping (and providing the "physical" infrastructure to a certain degree, for free) with hosting, backups, emails, DNS, security, updates - that's for consideration.

I mean, I've done that before, am doing it with my and our motorcycling forums, so I suppose I could help with FOC too, at least to a degree.

The issue atm is money and to process it, a bank account is required. And for that to happen myself and one other person needs to be on the account. Its as simple as that. So while I appreciate the advice, it dosen't help the situation right now.

Right

So the situation is that I cant find anyone to go as second name on a bank account. This will result in the forum is getting closed down after the 24/10/25, just under 2 weeks time. I tried, but its seems not enough people on here care enough to want to keep the forum alive.

Consider this the final notice.

Could be a language barrier, or something I'm not aware of, but it looks like we're hung up on the bank account, as opposed to trying to figure out how to keep this running.

On the first page of this thread, I saw Grahamm mention some hosting solution - this post.
I offered some help too.

It is also worth noting that the mentioned PM hasn't arrived - could be as simple as a forum bug.

  • To pay for the hosting and to take donations, we have to have a bank account that isn't someones personal account. Metro do this, but it require two names on the account mine and someone else's.
  • Graham's post was about hosting solutions down the line, not for right now.
  • I haven't had an PM's from you fella.

Some confusion/misunderstanding. I didn't say that I sent any PMs. This is what I referenced to:

https://foc-u.co.uk/mybb/showthread.php?...#pid980650

Doesn't matter - PMs seem to be working fine.

Can I just clarify that I never said I *didn't* want to co-sign the bank account, but:

a) I don't know what, if any, duties and responsibilities would be attendant to signing such a thing and

b) The nearest branch of Metro to me would be the equivalent of asking someone from London to travel to eg Oxford or Canterbury to sign up.

Is Metro really the only option? Are there others from more mainstream banks that have branches closer?

What responsibilities or liabilities would someone co-signing have?

Answers to those questions might help matters along.

Evening

For now this looks to be sorted with help from RMT after someone posted about the situation on the foc-u FB group. And yeah, I wasnt aware till today just how far apart the metro branches are once your north of Milton Keynes. Seems I am spoiled down where I am.

I will drop you a PM.

I wouldn't be doing what I do now, with such an amazing bike if it wasn't for this group! It must continue! The stuff I've learnt from scrawling through the pages in here is unreal! It would be devastating if it had to close! Long live foc-u

Not a lover of it myself, but too many use it which makes avoiding it difficult. I have all noticifcation for it turned off except the messenger as may of my friends outside of Ireland use it for contact. Once you can ignore the shite posted on it it is ok. I dont even have the app on my phone for it only the messenger side of it. The positive side is that got the information out about the site possible closing down if assistance was not found.
