FZ1N 2006 Speedometer onto a FZS1000 2001

Question:
I’m trying to install a 2006 Yamaha FZ1N digital speedometer on my 2001 Yamaha FZS1000 Fazer. Both models use the same 16-pin (2x8) connector, but the pin configurations and the wire colors seem to differ.

I have scoured the web trying to find something to help me and have spent many hours trying to figure out the wiring diagrams in the service manuals . However, as I’m new to this stuff, it turned out to be a bit more difficult than I thought. The only diagram I’ve found for the pin layout is for the FZS1000, which I’ve attached below. As much as I understand from the wiring diagrams in the service manual, I believe this pin layout seems to be correct.

I can’t seem to figure out the FZ1 2006 pin layout, though. I was really hoping it would be plug-and-play, but here we are!
Could someone provide a detailed pinout for the FZ1N speedometer, including wire colors and functions? If anyone has experience with this swap, how do I rewire the FZS1000 harness to work with the FZ1N speedometer? Are there any signal compatibility issues I should look out for (e.g., tachometer or speed sensor)?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Not possible, as the FZ1 Gen 1 instrument cluster is ECU controlled, only option is the 2000/2001 R1 clocks, but you lose the fuel guage as it only has a reserve light. 19988/1999 wont work ans it does not have Coolant Fan Motor Relay control see the downloads for the pin outs of 600, 1000 and both carburettor models of the R1.
I will upload a file I created when investigatng fitting a digital type instrument cluster to the 1000 with the instrument cluster pin outs of both versions of the carburettor R1 models, the Fzs1000 and the 3 versions of Fzs 600

Thanks so much for your reply. From what I understand, it seems like the FZ1N speedometer won’t work on my bike. What other aftermarket speedometers could I use, or what should I look for in a compatible unit? My goal is to convert the bike into a naked version while upgrading the speedometer, as the stock one feels quite clunky. 

Also, you mentioned a file you created with the pinouts—could you please share it here? I don’t seem to see it attached.

Managed to upload it this evening and it is waiting for admin approval
Correct FZ1 one won.t work. The easiest option as I said is the 2000/2001 R1 5JJ model, but you will need to move around a few pins in the cable connector on the harness
I am not sure what other clock will fit as the control of the Fan is the main issue

I’m fairly new to forums, so I’m still figuring things out. Could you clarify where I can find the attached file? Should it already be visible to me?
Additionally, could you guide me on which pins I would need to change once i get the R1 to get the speedometer?

Hey, since you seem to be an expert in this area I have another question. Since the R1 clock doesn’t have a fuel gauge, could I theoretically connect an aftermarket fuel gauge using the already installed fuel level indicator in the tank, or something similar?

Would never consider myself an expert, however there is a reserve light on the R1 clocks like there is on the Fazer clcoks which will work.
Yes you could theoretically connect an aftermarket fuel gauge or something.

Hey,
I received my R1 clock today and made the necessary changes to the pins on the connector. I connected all the pins according to your sketch and double-checked everything. Everything seems to be working—fan kicks in and all systems appear functional.

Now, regarding the fuel setup: I’ve decided not to pursue a fuel gauge and will rely on the fuel reserve light instead (Which i didint know it had before). However, I’ve encountered an issue—the fuel reserve light is constantly on, even though my tank is full. On the old clock everything also worked correctly.

Do you know what might cause this? Could there be a way to fix it so the light functions correctly?

I have attached a picutre below. Dont mind the oil light, it went away after the photo.

Just as an observation, the F 0.1km indicates you're just into reserve whcih is why the warning light is on.

I'd check whether it's actually getting the right signal from the tank level sensor.

Personally, on my FZ6, I never bother with the fuel gauge, I just reset the Trip 1 counter to 0.0 when I fill the tank and know that in summer I get 200 miles full tank to reserve and in winter it's 175 full to reserve.

Once the display switches to F 0.0 I know I've got a theoretical maximum of approximately 40 miles before it's completely empty.

Most likely reason is the the sensor on the R1 is a thermistor or level type and probably works in reverse. I never got that far in the project just got the unit working with the pinout, to many other things to do. You many be able to modify the set up of the fazer sender to work in reverse, but reverseing the wires would not be enough. It may be similiar to the old FZR 0nes, but I do not have R! or FZR ones to test.
Wonder if anyone has got an R1 sender to check ?
I have a sender unit in the garage and will have a look at how it could be modified over Christmas, but it would help if I had the values of the R1 sender

Thanks for pointing that out, but the tank's full, so I don’t think it’s a reserve issue. Also, the trip is set to 0, so that’s not the counter till reserve. I’d rather figure out how to get the gauge working properly than just rely on the trip counter.

If you do get a chance to check the sender unit you have in the garage over Christmas, I'd be very grateful for any findings. Do you think switching the wires definitely wouldn’t be enough? If adjustments are needed, what kind of modifications would I need to make? Let me know if there's anything specific I could provide or look into to assist with figuring out the values of the R1 sender.

No easy way to modifiy the FZS1000 sender, but looking through my infomation, the 3 wire sender from the 1998 to 2001 sender should work. This has a thermistor to operate the fuel light unlike the the later Foxeye models and the FZS1000 as these used the Instruments ECU to control it.

Of the 3wires from the Sender of 1998 to 2001 Boxeye Fzs600, the Green/Red and Black wires are the ones for the Thermistor are the ones to use. The third wire is for the guage will not be used
