Yes, it's quite straightforward.

oh good , so have you actually done that?
manual suggests engine out, but the chapter wasnt specifically on sump pan removal so i wasnt sure but if you have removed the sump pan in situ with engine still in then thats good news .

Yes. Took it off to change the selector forks a few years back.

no i was thinking if it was easy to take off and pass through the frame in situ, i can replace the pan with another (inc drain plug ) as a way to resolve the partially stripped oil drain threads than now leak a very small drop. 1/4 teaspoon of oil over 3 days, negligible leak but a replacement pan with bolt is £20 plus the price of a new gasket.

Sounds like a sensible solution. Much better than having the plug drop out on the motorway. :'( If time is less of an issue than money you might want to take the sump off before committing to a new gasket… mine came off without damage to the old one. I just smeared a little liquid gasket on and reused it.

Quite common to over wrench the sump bolt, i will admit to doing it myself.
But there's really no need at all, it only needs nipping up.
More people are born because of alcohol than will ever die from it.

yeh i blush to confess thats what i did , Mr Haynes states 43nm on the sump plug, not that you can get a torque wrench on the nut due to the frame and sidestand preventing anything other than a ring ( maybe thats why ) , so i lock my torque drive into the vice to feel what 43nm feels like and try to replicate with the ring....... as you say now i know that just a nip is enough, too late :o
