I need more peg/ground clearance on my FZ1-S so am contemplating fitting rearsets, however will these solve my problem or will I just end up touching the centre stand or something else down?

As a quick fix, will the pegs still touch down first if I remove the feelers/guides that poke out beneath them?

You could possibly remove the centrestand (providing you have a sidestand) and fit adjustable rearsets to their highest setting but it'd probably make the bike incredibly uncomfortable and just for the sake of an inch or 2 clearance.
If it's just for cornering then have you not tried just hanging off the bike a bit more?

Sadly need to keep the centre stand as I commute all year and it makes maintenance so much easier. I could probably hang off it a bit more with practice, but spent much of yesterday hanging off but still caught the pegs. It's a tad frustrating as I'll find myself out braking someone, but then we're into the corner and they're gone.
Giving myself a little more clearance would just help me carry a bit more speed whilst I work on my lines and body position.

Have you not thought of picking up a cheap track bike then? You can get an old zx9/thunderace/gixxer for less than a grand.
Doesn't need mot/insurance/tax if you can get it trailered or in the back of a van to the track Probably cheaper than a decent set of rearsets haha and you don't have to worry about binning it so much?

Have a 5PW R1, but need to sort out some sort of fueling issue, so want to have a bit of fun with the FZ1 in the meantime. Will probably just take off the feeler thingies for now and see what touches down first. Could be interesting.

Well as long as it's not ya face then I'm sure you'll be fine ?? haha

Shorter dog bones ??
Better rear shock, if not fitted. R6? Have you checked suspension set up, rear sag

Thanks guys.
I'll be back on track 3/10, so wouldn't have time (let alone the aptitude) to mod the suspension before then, possible longer term consideration though. If I bin it I'll post pics here first!

For a Gen2 FZ1 you'll need a Satans adapter and an R1 shock (2004-2008). This will give you about 20mm extra ride height (R1 shock is longer than the FZ1) and a much better shock. It will also mean that you back wheel will stay on the tarmac when you hoist it onto the centre stand.

Thanks again chaps.
Once I've sorted the pegs I'll probably just concentrate on my skills rather than fettling the suspension - if I swap the shock and find the centre stand subsequently isn't so effective then I might as well remove it, which is a compromise too far for this bike. When I'm at a point that a better shock will be making a noticeable difference to my riding then I might as welove just be using the other bike. |
