XP is the best (non server) OS Microsoft has produced. It is outdated now, no support.


Windows 7 is the next best thing. I wouldn't advise "upgrading". Windows 10 has very suspicious privacy policy and, while it does work a bit quicker than win 7, it still tends to take up too much RAM from time to time, for no obvious reason. So if not running 16 + GB of RAM, I'd definitely stick with Win 7.


Win 8 is the fastest OS, but the user interface is...    :crazy

I'm running a 3 year old laptop with 6GB RAM and the Mrs uses a similar aged one with 4GB RAM. Both run Windows 10 with no issues.

And thats the problem -it is too good, people like/ liked it so much that they are reluctant to give it up and microsoft have had to resort to almost blackmail to wrench it out of peoples hands.
The fact that it is not supported is a good thing because everytime there was an "update" it just broke somthing.

Generally, like most things, people will only leave a review when they want to moan about something, rather than to praise it, so I wouldn't take too much notice as I'm sure there are millions of people more than happy with Windows 10.
You have to take into account that some of these people may just have finger trouble or simply don't know what they're doing during the changeover process.

Anyhow, the memory problem will probably be solved with patches and/or a service pack.

Is you Operating system 64 bit or 32 bit?

and therein lies the issue Darssi...............they offer an upgrade where you just click a tab to accept but only once its upgraded do you find out that certain important things to you that once worked, no longer work and not only that......you then can't do anything about it. I understand loads like it and that's great but for the numpties like me its a crying shame that I'm now on here asking advice instead of just doing a system restore

On the next page click download
IE 11 will start to download
when it finishes downloading click Run
This will install the latest version of IE.

Internet explorer should already be installed, just type Internet in the search box !!! If you want to use it as your default browser just type Default in the search box, choose Default programs then Web Browser and select Internet Explorer.

/Edit: MS included IE11 in Windows 10 as a fall-back for sites that were not optimised for Edge.

It does not work on all upgrades and has to be reinstalled :grumble
I eventually gave up using it due to problems even though I liked it and now use Firefox.
Never really took to Google Chrome

I'm not really sure about that as it is part of the Windows 10 installation so there's no reason why it would have to be installed a second time unless the upgrade process failed at some point which isn't going to be a common occurrence.

Sounds like you're trying to polish a turd.
Time to move on and try a different browser, if you're not sure which one then try them all, apart from Edge, that's just minging.


One thing iwill recommend though, as i said earlier i use Chrome and i've downloaded a free app called ADBLOCK, which for some daft reason Edge won't let me use.
It blocks nearly all pop up adverts, and also stops those annoying 30 second videos on sites like YouTube, etc, before whatever you want to see.
An icon will sit in the top right corner of your so if you ever need to turn it off quickly, which is rare, then there is very easy access. It will also show a counter of how many ads blocked, mine's on nearly 400,000 at the moment, which goes to show how much annoying crap gets flaunted in front of you.
Really worth using if you don't already have it.

I didn't like Edge at first but I've adapted to it and now happily use it as my regular browser, it seems cleaner and smoother than older browsers and I've not had any major issues with it.

I was more than willing to use the Edge from the off but by it not allowing Adblock, and then finding out that Whatsapp Web didn't work either, which I really use a lot over the weekends while I'm on the laptop, it was a no brainer to go back to Chrome.
Realistically speaking Windows 10 is still a newbie and obviously, like anything new, it will have it's teething troubles, but as a whole I'm quite happy with it right now and would certainly recommend it, even more so while it's still free.
I am also part of "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" brigade, but in comparison to Windows 8 which I set up for a mate of mine on his new computer, it's a world apart and a great improvement.
I've jumped from W7 to W10, so not too much of a change for me to be honest.

At this stage any one who comes to me with odd ball problems from the upgrade that cannot be sorted in 30 minutes I back up the complete disk to a spare, wipe the original and install Windows 10 from scratch. Not only is it faster it is also more far more stable.

I must've picked up Malware when I changed over, but that Adwcleaner sorted it all out very well, the same as it did a couple of Xmas's ago when some sad bastard ruined everyone's day by hoofing out a nasty virus that completely took over the browser, and added about 3000 unwanted items to the my system.
My mates new laptop at the time had even more and it fixed his one as well. For such a basic looking app it works very thoroughly. :thumbup
