the thought of taking it apart in the street a fourth time does make me want to shoot myself, hopefully it will be ok.

Do you think slightly off timing could cause an intermittent misfire? I keep thinking that if the timing a set at a point why would it cause a misfire that doesn't occur at any particular point in the revs or throttle position.
The timing off one tooth on the fazer like yours is will have little or no effect and will not do any harm and definitely not cause a misfire.

It is common enough to put it back one tooth out as the exhaust cam rotates slightly as you put it back in. What you do is lift out the inlet cam then lift the exhaust cam  then lift the chain off the exhaust cam sprocket or rotate it back one tooth on the chain then put it all back together.

Chain replacement is not that big a job since split chain chains are available.
You were half way there when you had the cams out.

I was looking at the split chains, yes that would make it easier eh. Would need to get myself a new chain splitter (mines disappeared).

Also I see you can get manual cam chain tensioners for £30 - £40 if needed which I would prefer over paying the £140 for a new genuine one (ouch). Seems the job could be done well on a budget. I will of course be leaving it well alone until it rears its head again but nice to know the job wouldn't break the bank if it needed doing.

A manual tensioner is not necessary as the FZS600 ones are extremely tough and reliable.
I would consider one maybe or the Fzs1000, but never for the Fzs600
I have bought a few split chains from Wemoto and find them good to deal with.

Honda could take a leaf out or the yamaha fazer 600 book with regards cam chain tensioners. :lol
