So you come to a junction, slow right down and forget dropping down the gears then accelerate in too high a gear (or low whichever it is :o ) do you get a horrendous noise presumably from the chain

The engine would bog down and stutter but the only reason you'd get chain noise is if its too loose and you're only noticing it because of the 'quieter' engine noise

I'm not sure if I actually hear anything but I can definitely feel it.
Lugging. Sounds bad and it does nasty things to your engine.
Plain bearings rely on the surfaces moving past each other to maintain the oil film (like aquaplaning)… too big a load at very low revs means the pressure can exceed the film strength.
