Hi there,
This is my first post here and I'm after some help.
My Fazer is getting a bit worse for ware now with 57,000 miles on the clock and also not being able to stay in 2nd gear ( bent dogbones or something ) and I'm after a second hand engine but I am unsure weather to stay with the original 600 lump or try and see if any others fit.
I would like to try and get a larger engine in there I.E 1000 FZS lump would this be possible?
I have heard that the YZF 600 Thundercat engine fits but that to me is just a rumour.
Just wondering if anyone has any knowledge of what I can do in this situation ?
The bike still runs fine but just can't get on with having no 2nd gear. Any help will be appreciated.
Cheers guys
It's a fairly tight squeeze to get the engine in and out... you're unlikely to get a litre-sized one in without major modification to the frame. The Thundercat looks like the throttle bodies would be fouled by the frame too as the inlet tracts are are a steep angle. I'd stick to replacing with another FZS600 motor and, if you want more performance after that, sell it and buy a faster one.
full licenses don't come in cornflake packets!
Dogbones are for the suspension linkage
The 'dogs' you refer to are to do with gearbox parts, as you can guess with 2nd gear gone...
If you have little mechanical knowledge or have no mechanic friends, a replacement engine would be the best option.
Thundercat engine won't fit for a host of reasons, mainly because it has downdraft carbs (airbox is above the engine, not behind it as per the Fazer 600). Many internals are similar to the Fazer but the engine casings are different to accommodate the different Deltabox / Steel cradle frames.
Noone has attempted the 1000 engine AFAIK & without a working EXUP valve it would have awful low-down performance.
Go with a decent 2nd hand 1998-2003 FZS600 engine. Anything with under 30000 miles should still have plenty of life left in it. There's at least 8 engines on ebay at the moment between £100 and £400, tho price mainly reflects condition & mileage.
Obviously I cant be certain but item number 160712267043 (2003 and 17k miles) seems like a good option IF no exhaust studs are broken off
The later (FZ-6) engine runs via fuel injection instead of carbs. Wiring is almost certainly different, so I'd avoid the massive headache of trying to fit it. Besides, its heavily based on the early R6 engine which has more power at the top-end, at the expense of midrange, so it won't be as good for normal road use.
Yes, your garage is telling you the truth. Replacing the selector drum, fork, second gear etc. and various other bits like gaskets will cost as much as a second hand engine even before you add in the extra labour to fit them in your engine.
Be prepared to ask the seller what the state of the engine is if they don't explicitly say in the listing.
When I enquired after one that caught my fancy a couple of years ago the dealer admitted he didn't know whether 2nd gear was OK on that particular engine, but he did have a higher mileage one (40k) that he knew to be good so I bought that one instead and it's doing fine 20-odd thousand miles on.
the 660 kit is no longer made but it may be possable to use R6 or later FZ6 pistons for the same result
deefer has answered that in a question where someone else was looking for an engine, have a scroll through he posted it last night

Fazer 600 with a cbr1000f engine ha ha ha was a head ache but got it done eventually
Any fazer 600 engine from 1998 to 2003 will fit straight in.
