Rear Caliper.

is there an EASY alternative rear caliper to fit on this bike? As you'll know the standard one needs careful maintenance to stop it sticking, well it does if used all year round anyway. What have people fitted? Ta in advance.

Edit. I notice 2 threads referring to the Fazer thou caliper, do all of them fit as there are 2 different syles, the Front caliper lookalike and a smaller one from a later bike. Ta again

The easiest caliper to fit is the 2001-2005 Fazer FZS 1000 'bluespot' rear caliper. A tiny amount of filing to the caliper mount plate is needed. Downside is that they are rare and usually £££ on ebay. The later 2006 onwards FZ1 caliper is no use, totally different!

Alternative is Yam's TRX 850 caliper, which shares the same piston size so just as good. Needs the TRX850's longer brake hose, apparently. Usually cheaper than the FZS1000 caliper, but the downside is that it doesnt appear on ebay as often.

cool beans. TDM / TRX looks same design so does it not suffer the same issues? The rear is just a stabilising / trailing brake anyways in most situations so minor changes in ratio ar enot too much of an issue.

Food for thought. I wish I had the time to engineer a proper solution

One just sold on ebay for £49.. i had the link in for sale section but it still ran 5 days before it sold which suprised me. I got one last week for my Fazer and bought a 2nd hand hanger so i can keep the stock just in case. Got new pins and banjo washers in post so may attempt it sometime before march lol .

Not the same design at all, the pistons are way bigger than the standard FZS600 so offers loads more bite. Pad area larger too.
Bizarrely, despite more stopping power (and less inclination to seize up) the caliper still retains a decent amount of sensitivity re rear wheel lockups, although you might lose that with a braided rear hose fitted.
I've owned a TRX850, had a FZS600 and now have the 1000 so have experience of all caliper options.
Bottom line is that its a decent upgrade that works well, dont know of anyone on the old site who wasnt pleased with the conversion for their 600.

I paid £50 for mine last week but have seen them go for a lot more as well. That one looked to be in good shape too.. i took a chance on mine but when it came with a quick clean around the showing edge of the pistons i was able to push them in with my fingers and since then i have stripped, cleaned it and ready for the attempt at the hanger mod.

cool. Can't put a price on safety really. My standard one is seizing again so good timing. Getting new disc and pads too.

The bike is my main commuter so needs to be tip top in braking even if it looks like a shed, which it does.

just managed to win a good nick standard Thundercat rear disc for £14.99 delivered too. Whoo hoo.

Looks like I need to get my Bastard cut round or half round file out of the box soon.

Hi,

Just bought my 3rd FZS and had the same issue for the 2nd time, 3rd went over the top of an Audi TT (SMIDSY) Daddys Audi didn't come off to well LOL. Any how I digress, about the back brake.

I have just done the TRX mod to grate success, well I say success I mean a bit of messing around due to a dodgy calliper from flea bay (Broken bleed nipple) What I did was secure a mounting bracket from a TRX850 and fit a YZF750 rear calliper. Easy enough as they are exactly the same, seems to have worked fine and nice braking.

My rear caliper is sticking, if I don't go down the replacement/upgrade route, what parts do I need to be looking at replacing/purchashing?  Seeing as it's brakes I'll be getting my local garage to do it, but I'd like to make sure they replace the correct bits.

well, stainless steel pistons and a new seal kit would do the job.

As stated, new seals will help. Check your pistons to see if they're heavily corroded...if they are, then replacements like Lumpy suggested are the best way to go. Pattern ones from Nikone or similar work fine, used them regularly on my own brakes, not too sure about less familiar names....

Fazer101 - excellent update to the knowledge database....I suggested last year that the Thunderace / YZF750 / early XJR1200 rear calipers *might* fit as they looked the same as the TRX850 one, nice to know that another rear caliper definitely fits. Beats me why Yam didnt fit those calipers to the FZS600 in the 1st place....

Possibly, but then again as discussed they used the TRX/YZF/XJR/TRX Sumitomo rear on quite a few '90's Yams, must have had quite a few thousand of them lying around. After all, they had a few front bluespots going spare & had no problem fitting them to the bike instead of the usual bargain-bucket rubbish.

Is the 98-03 FZS600 rear caliper fitted to any other Yams? Can't think of any that come to mind, not even something @ budget level like the early Diversion 600.
If not, then it was made just for that model, which would instead be the expensive option!

used them on the front on the FZ750 and FJ series (early ones) so an old caliper.

just about of info
i did the trx rear brake caliper mod about a year ago and would recommend it. i have had no issues or problems with it what so ever.
the rear brake has plenty of feel  it has never siezed, in actual fact i have not had to done anything with it or cleaned it or anything. i have probably done 2500 miles with it.
i think the reason it does not sieze is because the bottom of the calliper is fitted with a plastic cover which is a loose enough fit for any water to drain out  where as the original fazer caliper only has 2 small drain holes and once these clog the brake pistons are then sitting in a bath of rain water and road salt
