If the area that you keep it is subject to outside temperature then if we have few days of very cold and as happens quite a lot in this country -the next day the temperature has gone from 2 degrees to 15 then the very cold metal parts will be covered in condensation. So If its really cold for a few days and you see the forecast is +++ loads of degrees then that is the time to go and cover the engine / whole bike and by slowing down the temp change you will prevent condensation forming.
It can also protect the inlet rubbers and other rubber/ plastic parts from splitting, becoming brittle. Its an old bike and needs all the help it can get
