I've found the connectors and give them a good spray with switch cleaner. Not much in the way of corrosion but its all clear now.
I am still not getting power on the red/green wire, to be quite honest, I'm not getting power showing on most of the connections on the plug that goes into the dash, ignition off and on. Whilst I might not have solved anything, I don't think I've made it any worse.
Temporarily connecting the dash, everything seems to work including lights, indicators and horn.
I've ordered the battery now so lets see how it goes when it's been fitted. The CR2032 currently fitted has lasted several years so I can always use another one if the rechargeable doesn't work.
