If the switches weren't new, it's highly likely they were already suffering just not enough to cause a short, even if they weren't after a couple years water can and will get in. The relay suffers the same and from overzealous jet and hose pipe washing, I've known these to fail because of the washing within a few months.
As also mentioned the kill switch could also be the issue, but the fact it's starting after repeated attempts, suggest the relay, as the contacts are jammed and repeated attempts is freeing them. The relay can be taken apart but be careful it it's corroded replace it, it will just get worse.
Started playing up again over the last few days, so now I just keep pressing the starter until it decides to start which it always does eventually.
Last night I gave the kill switch and starter button a good spray with contact cleaner but it did the same thing again this morning.
So I just ordered a new starter relay switch and hopefully that will sort it out.
More people are born because of alcohol than will ever die from it.
