Yellow dash light 600 - darrsi - 21-01-21
Couple of days ago I went to start the bike in pitch darkness very early morning and the starter did nothing.
It just flashed up the yellow dash light, which I'm guessing is an engine light, and the red oil light.
I hadn't ridden it for a couple of days so pumped the clutch lever in case the clutch plates were sticking and a couple of goes later it started and all was good again, so i just let it go.
As I had today off I gave the battery a charger boost for 5hrs, and then I just changed the oil and filter as well.
Before changing the oil I let the bike tick over for 5mins to warm the oil up a bit before draining it.
When I was all done, I turned the key, and it was dead again, with just those two lights showing.
After about 4 or 5 attempts, and some serious staring, it then sprung to life again?
I let it run for a bit then switched off and on a few times and it was totally fine.
As it was an ignition issue I also gave the ignition barrel a good spray with some Contact Cleaner.
Question is, if this happens again and I can't get it going, where should I start looking for faults?
I had issues years ago with ropey starting, and the Contact Cleaner spray worked miracles on the ignition barrel, so I'm hoping it won't happen again, but if it does any ideas why as this specific problem is not something I have encountered before?

The sidestand switch was disabled years ago so it's not that.

Clutch, neutral switches and starter circuit cut off relay, could be any or all. Water ingress it's what kills them.

I thought the lights were:
Indicator - Green
Neutral - Green
High Beam - Blue
Oil Level - Red
Engine overheat - Red
Which one have I missed thats yellow?
If the kill switch is playing up it will just show the oil light and neutral light
If its in gear and the side stand is down - same as above
If it in gear and side stand is up but clutch not pulled in - same as above
Look at the kill switch or the neutral switch if you are sure the bypass you have done in the side stand switch is good still.

Bit worried because I have to leave early in the morning so I just popped out to start it and it started on the button without hesitation, so hopefully that'll be the case in the morning too.
I wouldn't be surprised if cleaning the ignition barrel has sorted it, because after cleaning the bike the other day I then rode in heavy rain and when I saw the bike the next day it was covered in white powdery shit that had dried all over it.
No idea what's in the rain these days but it's certainly dirty enough to clog up the ignition barrel over time.
I might have to make [size=1em]some sort of cap to cover the ignition hole as I've been doing 12hr shifts and the bike sits outside work in all weathers[/size]
[size=1em]The yellow light is next to the fuel pump sign in the fuel guage window on the right side. If you tap the starter button when the engine is running you will see it light up.[/size]

None of my bikes have ever failed an MOT, other than a cheeky maneuvere my mechanic does when he fails then immediately passes on something trivial. Like when I took a new tyre in to be changed even though my old one was totally within spec, but he failed the old one then passed the MOT with the new one.
Doesn't bother me, apart from the fact that he's never told me, i found out myself on the Government website. He's done it about 3 times.

Yep, that lights up with the oil light when you have a fault condition (side stand, in gear etc)

Three quarters of a tank full in it at the moment.
I never let the fuel run very low which is why I've not seen it before.

Just looked at a picture of a clutch switch, and i'm pretty sure that was replaced a few years ago, I'll have to check my maintenance paperwork.
So although it's not brand new it's also not a 20 year old original part either.

Just looked at a picture of a clutch switch, and i'm pretty sure that was replaced a few years ago, I'll have to check my maintenance paperwork.

In the last 10,000 miles I've replaced the starter relay, clutch switch, and reg/rectifier. (and plugs & TPS) These would've all been tried out one at a time to fix the last starting issue I had which was eventually solved by simply spraying the ignition barrel with Contact Cleaner.

As mentioned test/check the switches they can just be looped out. Just because you replaced them a few years ago doesn't mean they not suffering water ingress. If the switches weren't new, it's highly likely they were already suffering just not enough to cause a short, even if they weren't after a couple years water can and will get in. The relay suffers the same and from overzealous jet and hose pipe washing, I've known these to fail because of the washing within a few months.
As also mentioned the kill switch could also be the issue, but the fact it's starting after repeated attempts, suggest the relay, as the contacts are jammed and repeated attempts is freeing them. The relay can be taken apart but be careful it it's corroded replace it, it will just get worse.

Started playing up again over the last few days, so now I just keep pressing the starter until it decides to start which it always does eventually.
Last night I gave the kill switch and starter button a good spray with contact cleaner but it did the same thing again this morning.
So I just ordered a new starter relay switch and hopefully that will sort it out.
