I'm thinking it might be a lot easier to remove the sump and you might find the missing link there. I'm thinking the sump can removed with engine in place. Of course you would have to remove the exhaust system first, but you'd have to do that anyway to remove the cylinder head. Hopefully without any of the exhaust studs snapping. Good luck with it.
