Engine tear down - First time fazer - 18-11-20
Hi guys, so recently tried to cheat when replacing the cam chain on my 2001 fzs 600. Was going fine until... I dropped the joining link into the dark depths of the cam chain tunnel, I'm assuming it's caught up somewhere down in the crank case, my question is... How possible is it to take off the cylinder head and block with the engine in situ? And is there anything likliy to spring out of place by removing the head and block? I know it's a noob question to ask but there you go. Any help or advice.. would be welcomed, and I do expect the right amount of piss taking too.. thanks in advance.

It is possible to take the head off with the engine in the frame but it is easier with the engine on the floor/bench.

Nice one, I don't have a bench I have the floor next to the bike haha so the head can come off with the engine in place, I see it can split down into 3? Peices, how many of those would I need to/ be able to take off while the engine is in place, and be able to see down close enough to the crank to retrieve my missing link... ?

I'm thinking it might be a lot easier to remove the sump and you might find the missing link there. I'm thinking the sump can removed with engine in place. Of course you would have to remove the exhaust system first, but you'd have to do that anyway to remove the cylinder head. Hopefully without any of the exhaust studs snapping. Good luck with it.

Thanks, I have removed exhaust and sump (thankfully without stripping any exhaust studs!) But the link must be up in the crank case somewhere, I'm going to have one last ditched attempt with a small magnetic on some wire to see if I can send that down the cam chain tunnel and pick it up!

Been there done that. Telescopic magnet is your friend here. That worked for me. Couple of quid on E bay. Lot cheaper than a gasket set. Good luck. Let us know how you get on.

Thanks guys.. got one ordered with a 5mm head so hopefully that's small enough to get down there, will keep you updated thanks for the advice

The link I dropped was sat on top of the cam chain drive sprocket on the crank. Good luck.

Hi all, just wanted to let you all know I have managed to get the pesky link out of the engine, new camchain fitted and reassembled she runs like a dream again without that annoying rattle on start up! Thank you all for the help
