One of the first things I do to any bike I buy, fit a fender extenda, always drill them and use M4 stainless steel button head screws and stainless nyloc nuts.
No problems, no rust, and haven't lost one yet. I think the black looks fine on any colour bike myself, you can get carbon effect as well.
I make my own Radiator guards (stone guards) as well, using car radiator grille mesh, different shapes and colours available on e bay.
