They work very well and are definitely worth fitting to keep water and stones from abusing the radiator, and black will be fine on a silver bike.
The best way is to drill a couple of holes, then they're fixed on with two plastic nut & bolts. Adhesive probably works okay but if you're an all year round rider in all weathers then you may as well do things properly, as it is an area that will get abused by the elements.
If you haven't already got one i would recommend a radiator cover as well.
Belly pans are just a cosmetic thing, and more about looks than having any practical use.
