Yes, engine was still in place. It honestly isn't difficult as he is in no way a good mechanic. Simply get the bits stick some liquid metal between the parts and try and piece them together. Once you have attached the bits let them set. Once they have hardened smother the crankcase in liquid metal to cover the cracks and missing bits. 
If it's broken, it's not fixed.
