Liquid metal can cover any small missing pieces. The sump cover is easily removed it's simply undoing the bolts and removing. You will need to buy a new sump gasket and take the downpipes off for good access. When you have sump cover off you will get a good view of the crank. My mates crank had marks on the counter balancers on the crank and it still runs as before, so as long as you remove any debris it should be fine. 
If it's broken, it's not fixed.
