It's even easier than that, at the ends of the gear change rod (Passes through the frame) there are two 10mm AF nuts, one is Left hand thread, once you've slackened both off you can turn the rod and this will adjust the position of the lever.
A lot of people have changed the lever at the gearbox end for an early R1 part, this reduces the movement required at the foot lever. Search the forum for previous posts for the year of the R1.
