sprocket nut

Hi guys, i have recently heard about the problem with the sprocket nut not fititng properly and falling out, i have an old 98 fazer, 4'600 miles, i'm a bit paranoid now and want to go check it out, what am i looking for?, is it easy to check myself or would taking it to the garage be the best bet?
