How on earth do I get to the bottom nut on the ad(f)uster?

Can't get spanners or sockets in there, even if I removed the pin and pedal. I have tried loosening the top nut, depressing the pedal slightly so the bracket isn't resting under spring pressure on the bottom nut, and the nut is more than finger tight still (thread must be gunged up a bit). The length of thread below the nut prevents me from even getting some long nose pliers on the nut from below if I remove the pedal pin. Puzzled :\
