because the cap will be scrap anyway.
alternatively measure the depth of a handy friends cap, put some tape on a drill bit 1" higher and drill with impunity. the seal on the cap should prevent any spark/vapour interface.
tbh, if you get sparks when you drill you're doing it wrong!!
