Other option I have I'd to just put spacing washers on it to raise it, I think there is enough thread still left to give it a good grip

That will not work. There is nearly no thread left. It was quite critical when installed the 2 mm bracket for my 12 V socket today. I used liquid thread lock beause the locking part of the nut had nearly no overlap with the bolt thread....
