3000rpm is a total error code, as in not working at all, or unplugged, but my last 2 broke down gradually rather than just stopped working completely.
I was getting erratic readings at first then it wouldn't stay on the 5000rpm mark when I checked it again a week or two later, so it was generally misbehaving.
The bike had a jittery feeling about it as well.
I bought 2nd hand ones both times so there's no real idea how long they might last as they will obviously be used and quite old, but new ones aren't cheap at all.
