TPS Adjustment/codes - jonest27 - 20-02-15

Hi all! Me again.

not really having any issues but was reading some posts so Thought I'd put the bike in "TPS mode" and see what my tacho said only out of curiosity.
So I did and it read just over 10,000. The haynes manual says that if it reads either 0 or 10,000 then to rotate it until it reads 5,000. I've rotated it as far as it goes both ways and the taco doesnt move. It's like I havent touched it.
I wanna get it to 5,000 to see if it feels any different but not sure how to if rotating it doesnt work.
Any ideas?

Thanks

you have to rotate it very gradually or itll shoot straight past it,  unplug it then plug back in then slowly adjust it.

Re: TPS Adjustment/codes - darrsi - 20-02-15

If it doesn't want to move then that is the sign of a knackered one, and will need replacing.
That's what happened with my last one.

Re: TPS Adjustment/codes - jonest27 - 20-02-15

Cheers both. Darrsi, I thought that if it was broken it would go to 3000? Or have I got that wrong?

Re: TPS Adjustment/codes - Paulfzs - 20-02-15

it took me about 15 minutes to work out how to make the rpm move its like 1mm of movement before it goes back to 10,000

Re: TPS Adjustment/codes - darrsi - 20-02-15

3000rpm is a total error code, as in not working at all, or unplugged, but my last 2 broke down gradually rather than just stopped working completely.
I was getting erratic readings at first then it wouldn't stay on the 5000rpm mark when I checked it again a week or two later, so it was generally misbehaving.
The bike had a jittery feeling about it as well.

I bought 2nd hand ones both times so there's no real idea how long they might last as they will obviously be used and quite old, but new ones aren't cheap at all.

Ahh, ok, cheers for this. I was just moving it through the whole spectrum. Also, I watched a youtube video that says you should give it a couple of seconds for the tacho to register the change which I also wasn't doing. I'll give it another bash in a bit.

Once you move it, it should just ping about, it's quite sensitive.

You're right mate, it must be knackered. Tried messing with it again, took the screws out completely and rotated it 180 degrees, still 10000, so took the thing off (still connected to the cable) and turned the thing inside and still the same. Guess I'm gonna have to hunt for one on Ebay, dont fancy paying £165 for one off yamaha motorcycle spares.
Seen one for £25 but from a 99 fazer. Mines a 2002, does the year make a difference?
Also, what does the TPS do exactly? I mean the bike still runs even though it's broken so is it really that important?

Cheers

It will still run but certainly not smoothly.
Does sound like you need a new one though.

I always get mine from Fazerspares.

It adjusts the ignition timing depending on the load on the engine, for heavier loads (more throttle) the timing is retarded slightly.

If it was okay and needed no adjustment then i would just leave it alone, don't try and fix what isn't broke as they say.  Wink

Re: TPS Adjustment/codes - unfazed - 22-02-15

If you cannot get the 5000 on the tacho then remove the two screws and rotate the TPS until you can.
If you still cannot set to to 5000 or if you can set it and it's outside the range of the screws, then the TPS is faulty and will need to be replaced.
