I did the mod a few years ago. It basically shortens the travel of the gear lever. It makes it slightly stiffer to change gear because the travel is reduced, but it's a worthwhile mod in my opinion. 
Ps.. make sure the linkage rod doesn't make contact through the frame. I had to file mine so it didn't touch when changing gear.

If it's broken, it's not fixed.
