rear shock removal

hi a bit stuck went to remove my rear shock everything undone until i went to take the nut off the top of the shock which is attached to the frame as the nut is in line with the frame cannot use a socket even with the socket attachment that pivats as it wont hold straight with the amount of force needed and the nut is in too far for a spanner is there a tool to remove this or am i missing the obvious thanks.
