Guess what you guys were spot on 
it had broken into pieces...... new one ordered and will be fitted on Thursday.
Just a small point which may be relevant for others, prior to my speedo stopping I had a very slight squeek from the front wheel which could only be heard when coasting. this may be a coincidence but might have been a tell tale sign that it was about to break?
