Speedo stopped - kevinuk1 - 31-10-14

Can anyone give me an idea of any quick fault finding tips on how to diagnose why my speedo has stopped, speed and mileage/trip not working

Am ok with electrics/electronics just not sure exactly where to start

Any help much appreciated, thanks in advance

Re: Speedo stopped - darrsi - 31-10-14

Had the front wheel off at all recently?

Re: Speedo stopped - kevinuk1 - 31-10-14

No, been using bike every day just suddenly stopped working

Re: Speedo stopped - mickvp - 31-10-14

first port of call is to pop the wheel off and have a look at the lugs on the speedo drive doodah. they are prone to breaking, althoug its normally in the process of removing/refitting a wheel.

Re: Speedo stopped - kevinuk1 - 31-10-14

Are there any lugs ? Is that if you have a drive cable , thought there is a sensor

Re: Speedo stopped - limax2 - 31-10-14

Yes there are lugs on the "doodah" thing that revolves with the wheel and the lugs engage in two slots in the wheel. The sensor gets the signal from it as it revolves. If the lugs break then no signal.

Re: Speedo stopped - kevinuk1 - 31-10-14

Oh ok I will check tomorrow thanks

Re: Speedo stopped - limax2 - 31-10-14

Just be careful taking the wheel out and especially putting it all back as it is easy to break the lugs during that operation. Good luck.

Re: Speedo stopped - Deefer666 - 03-11-14

and check the wire coming off the sensor to make sure it hasn't been caught by the disc, although as mentioned before my money is on the lugs snapping off the ceramic drive dog inside the sensor.

Re: Speedo stopped - Vys - 04-11-14

Hi,

i had same problem recently (+ a few more), so if your tachometer works fine and doesnt jump to 3k or 4k revs constantly then it'll be Rotor sensor (same plastic/magnet thingy on the wheel as it was said in previous posts) or might be wires damaged somewhere between speed sensor to gauges unit.

If so then youre looking for Rotor Sensor Part No  5VU-2517G-00-00

also attached picture of it...

Good luck

Re: Speedo stopped - Deefer666 - 04-11-14

from memory they are about £15 from Yamaha

Re: Speedo stopped - mtread - 04-11-14

and notice that the replacement doodah is plastic rather than ceramic, so much less likely to break.
O, and make sure you put plenty of grease on it when you fit, otherwise it makes a hell of a whining noise, and you then have to take it out and do it again, as I know ...............

Re: Speedo stopped - kevinuk1 - 04-11-14

Thanks to all those who have passed on info/help etc..... unfortunately I have not been able to investigate it myself due to work commitments so its now with a local repairer.

Do appreciate feedback, I will report back with what was wrong hopefully later today to assist anyone else in the future. Its my main transport so missing it already  Sad

Re: Speedo stopped - Update - kevinuk1 - 04-11-14

Guess what you guys were spot on  Wink it had broken into pieces...... new one ordered and will be fitted on Thursday.

Just a small point which may be relevant for others, prior to my speedo stopping I had a very slight squeek from the front wheel which could only be heard when coasting. this may be a coincidence but might have been a tell tale sign that it was about to break?

Anyhow thanks for all your feedback

Kevin

This all got far too technical for me  :lol

Re: Speedo stopped - papercutout - 05-11-14

Just for reference, in case anyone else gets this problem and it ISN'T the sensor - my speedo stopped working, I took the gauges apart and there was corrosion on the board. I cleaned it up with electrical cleaner and it worked again.

Re: Speedo stopped - kevinuk1 - 06-11-14

All now sorted for £40 very happy with that Smile
