if the battery dies (low power) the system enters "Sleep" mode; your observations sound like a sleep mode; hold the button down on the transmitter and turn the ignition on whilst keeping the button down - what happens
can you make the alarm enter Service Mode ?
have you also tried to override using the default "0000" PIN
If all the above fail to correct the problem then you probably have a bad earth to the alarm unit; if you can access the alarm I can guide you through troubleshooting but FIRST please ensure your try the above procedures otherwise troubleshooting will not work
