They are all pretty much the same but make sure you get one suitable for a boat or other exposed use. Probably the only difference will be that the cap and or case will be rubber instead of plastic to make it weather proof.
Although you can go straight to the battery, I would strongly advise that you go via a relay on a switched circuit such a the side lights.

It is not nearly as scary as it first looks as Pat had two or three other things wired into the same place.
I did not like Pat's choice of location, and I didn't want it under the seat as for me that that meant too much faffing around to get to it, so I found that hanging it from the bar holding the front right fairing in place was the best solution for me. It is very hard to see unless you go looking for it, but it is easy to hand and obvious when I have left something plugged in and has the advantage of being very close to the bars for powering GPS etc.
