It's a good bet that the pilot jets are clogged which is why it's struggling to start and won't run without choke. Carbs out and a proper clean required.
Don't sweat the ignition timing - that's not the problem here.
+1 had the same problem with a blandit 600 yesterday, been stood 7 months only ran on full choke. Stripped and cleaned carbs found fuel had varnished the insides if the carbs and blocked the jets. It's now running sweet as a nut
